Xi Duo Duo: A Hidden Chinese Gem Serving Egg Rice and Traditional Noodles

Introducing Xi Duo Duo

Maxwell Food Centre has quickly become one of my favorite spots for delicious and budget-friendly meals. However, the popular stalls often come with long queues. This time, I decided to try a lesser-known eatery, Xi Duo Duo.

Xi Duo Duo is a Chinese restaurant that doesn't have an online presence. When I visited on a weekday, there were no customers in line, which made ordering a breeze without any waiting.

A Unique Menu

The menu at Xi Duo Duo features a mix of traditional Chinese dishes along with some egg rice and noodles inspired by the Danlao style, which is quite bold since Danlao operates in the same area. I opted for the Braised Pork with Egg Rice (S$6), topped with a light golden scrambled egg and a generous portion of braised pork. The simplicity of this dish warmed my heart. The scrambled egg was perfectly fluffy, while the braised pork was sweet and tender.

Traditional Noodle Dishes

Next, I moved on to the classic Chinese dishes, starting with the Beijing Zha Jiang Noodles (S$5). The thick noodles were coated in a rich zha jiang sauce. Once mixed, the sauce clung to each strand perfectly. This dish was slightly sweeter than the usual zha jiang noodles, but not overly so, striking a nice balance between sweet and savory.

The Spicy Sichuan Dandan Noodles (S$5) were another excellent choice. Right from the start, I was impressed by the generous heap of minced meat on the plate. Xi Duo Duo certainly doesn’t skimp on the meat. This dish was similar to the Beijing Zha Jiang noodles but creamier and sweeter, though I didn’t find it spicy at all. At S$5 for such a large portion, it was truly a great value!

Irresistible Appetizers

Finally, I ordered the Shan Dong Fried Layered Pancakes (S$7 for 10 pieces). The crispy outer layer was a highlight as it was light and incredibly addictive with its crunch. These pancakes were generously filled with minced meat and green onions. I loved the combination of the smooth skin, chewy filling, and crispy exterior, making for a very satisfying and delicious dish.

Conclusion

Overall, despite the slightly overcooked fried chicken, Xi Duo Duo significantly exceeded my expectations. The biggest strength of this eatery is definitely the pricing, with most dishes priced between S$5 and S$6. The generous portions made each dish fulfilling and satisfying, and I truly enjoyed everything I tried. Xi Duo Duo will definitely be on my list of stops during my future visits to Maxwell Food Centre!
