Discover the Historical Site of Xẻo Quýt
I recently took an exciting trip to Xẻo Quýt, a captivating wetland forest nestled deep in Đồng Tháp province. This area served as a hiding spot for Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War, where they strategized their attacks against American forces. It’s located about 130 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City, making it a perfect spot for a weekend getaway.
Upon entering, I felt as if I had stepped back in time, surrounded by lush green tràm trees and remnants of history like hidden bunkers and unexploded ordnance. It was like walking through a documentary about Vietnam during wartime.
A Unique Experience in a Traditional Wooden Boat
Even though it wasn’t my first visit, I must say that the boat ride through the tràm forest is truly worth it. Sitting in the boat, I glided gently through patches of thick greenery, with sunlight filtering through the canopy, casting shimmering patterns on the water’s surface. It was an indescribably peaceful feeling.
Additionally, you can walk or bike along the small paths in the area. This activity gives you a panoramic view of the forest, from the little bridges crossing the canals to the dense bushes lining the paths.

A Taste of Authentic Mekong Cuisine
After an exhausting day of exploration, I stopped by a small lakeside eatery to indulge in a meal rich in Mekong flavors. Everything was delicious, from crispy fried catfish to the tangy sour soup typical of the region. This culinary experience is a must for anyone visiting Xẻo Quýt.
Tips for Visiting Xẻo Quýt
For a complete experience, I recommend visiting Xẻo Quýt during the flooding season from September to December, when the water levels are high enough for the wooden boats to navigate easily. Don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and try to avoid weekends or holidays if you want to escape the crowds.
If you’re traveling independently, be prepared to pay 20,000 VND for entry and an additional 25,000 VND if you wish to take a boat ride. These prices are quite reasonable for an experience that combines nature and history.
Getting There and Where to Stay
While there aren’t many accommodation options right in Xẻo Quýt, a short drive of about 20-30 kilometers will lead you to several budget-friendly hotels in Tháp Mười town or Cao Lãnh city.
If you want to diversify your experience, consider combining this trip with an exploration of the Mekong Delta. This region has so much more waiting for you to discover!
