Experience a Unique Sailing Adventure in the Caribbean

Imagine yourself on a cruise… but oddly enough, surrounded by people who aren't fond of cruising. Sounds paradoxical, right? But that’s exactly what I experienced on my journey with Star Clippers, a week-long adventure across the Caribbean aboard the Royal Clipper. The trip kicked off as we boarded in Barbados, where we stood on deck admiring the five towering masts of the Royal Clipper while spotting two massive cruise ships in the harbor. Someone pointed at them and exclaimed, "Aren't we lucky not to be on those ships!" And, as if on cue, everyone nodded in agreement.

Royal Clipper: The Star of the Journey

The Royal Clipper truly is the highlight of this voyage. Every detail on the ship is captivating. In 2001, the Guinness World Records recognized it as the largest square-rigged sailing ship still in operation. With a capacity of just 230 guests, our cruise had 199 participants, making a significant difference. There were no fights for deck chairs, endless hallways, or overcrowded tours with guides waving umbrellas.

Climbing the Masts

Another unique feature of the Royal Clipper is the opportunity to climb the masts for a breathtaking view from above. Initially, I was a bit skeptical, but once I learned that this was a safe and approved activity, I jumped at the chance. Only about five people climb at a time when the ship is anchored. Equipped with safety harnesses and waterproof bags for our cameras, the experience of scaling the mast was exhilarating. The panoramic views of the sea and mountains from up top were nothing short of stunning.

Diving into the Sea

But my favorite part was definitely swimming off the back of the ship. When the ship anchored, the crew would set up a swimming platform for guests to jump in at will. I enjoyed two fantastic swimming sessions in Martinique and St. Lucia, especially in St. Lucia, where I had the chance to admire the breathtaking Pitons while floating in the crystal-clear waters. Just swimming around the ship and gazing up at those towering masts was enough to make you feel truly connected to this place.

A Photo Safari on the Final Day

On the last day, if the weather permits, you can join an "photo safari." The ship sails around the Royal Clipper while it raises its sails, offering a fantastic opportunity to capture stunning photographs. Our photo session took place at Soufrière, St. Lucia, with the Pitons rising majestically in the background, bathed in the golden light of the Caribbean, creating a picture-perfect scene.

Tips for Cruising with Star Clippers

The Royal Clipper isn’t the best choice for those with mobility issues. There are no elevators, the stairs can be steep, and some doors are quite heavy. However, if you’re comfortable with that, this is a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t find on larger cruise ships.

What’s particularly special is that Star Clippers takes you not only to famous islands but also to less-traveled spots. You won't encounter crowds, and everything feels more serene and intimate.
