Recently, I took a flight with American Airlines from New York to Los Angeles aboard the A321XLR. While the seating was visually appealing, the service was inconsistent, which left me feeling a bit disappointed.

Check-In and Boarding Process

I completed my check-in at DFW airport in the morning. After landing at JFK, my son and I headed straight to the lounge. Interestingly, my boarding pass displayed “First Class,” even though I was in the “Flagship Business” section. This could confuse those unfamiliar with the setup. Although I didn’t expect to access the Chelsea lounge, I was quite pleased with the Greenwich Lounge, where I waited until our flight was called.

Space and Seating

The Flagship Business Class features 20 herringbone-style seats arranged in a 1×1 configuration. My first impression was that the aisle felt quite narrow due to the bulky seat design. However, this layout surprisingly provided more privacy than I anticipated. Even with the cabin nearly full, peeking into the suites wasn’t straightforward.

Facilities Issues

One issue I noticed was the removal of the central lavatory, leaving only three restrooms for both the Premium Economy and Main Cabin passengers. This was clearly uncomfortable, especially with 20 passengers in the Business Class. It didn’t give off a truly “premium” vibe.

Flagship Seat Comfort

The Flagship Suite seats are quite comfortable and can convert into a flat bed. I found the seat width to be 21 inches, and the length when fully reclined was about 76 inches. The pillow and blanket provided on my seat were also quite cozy. However, I didn’t appreciate that to look out the window, I had to tilt my head 90 degrees, which could lead to neck pain on a long flight.

Storage Space

The storage space in the seat was rather limited, with just a few small shelves that couldn’t accommodate much. Nevertheless, I did like the transparent drink tray detail. Still, the lack of storage space is a significant drawback.

In-Flight Entertainment

As for in-flight entertainment, the screens were high-quality, offering a variety of films and shows. I spent some time watching a few movies during the flight.

Conclusion

In summary, while my flying experience with American Airlines on the A321XLR was fairly good, some issues such as inconsistent service, limited storage space, and design shortcomings affected my overall satisfaction. I hope that American Airlines will address these concerns in the future.
