Experience United Airlines Economy Class on the 787-9 from Los Angeles to London

Overview of the Journey

United Airlines offers a commendable economy class experience on long-haul flights, especially from the West Coast of the United States. In this post, I'll share the details of my flight from Los Angeles to London aboard the Boeing 787-9.

Booking and Costs

For this trip, I opted for a basic economy ticket for the first time, saving about $100 per passenger. I chose this fare because my travel plans were confirmed, with no changes expected, and I wanted to save money for other expenses during my family trip.

Notably, United Airlines has a “family seating guarantee” even for basic economy tickets, which allowed us to sit together, albeit in the rear of the aircraft.

Flight Information

Flight United 923 departed from Los Angeles (LAX) at 8:00 PM and was scheduled to arrive in London (LHR) at 1:30 PM the next day, with a flight duration of 10 hours and 30 minutes. Given the length of the journey, having a comfortable seat is crucial.

My seat was located in row 56F, configured in a 3-3-3 layout. While the modern aircraft provided a smooth cabin atmosphere and features like large windows and quiet engines, the economy seating felt a bit cramped. Nevertheless, the seat was quite comfortable with an adjustable headrest.

In-Flight Experience

Each seat on the flight was equipped with a personal entertainment screen, USB charging ports, and A/C power outlets, which made for a convenient entertainment experience during the long haul. I had packed a cushion and good headphones for the kids to avoid using the airline's complimentary ones.

As a result, the kids enjoyed watching movies on their phones and tablets for the first 90 minutes before drifting off to sleep. I, on the other hand, couldn't sleep but took the opportunity to work during the flight by connecting to the complimentary Wi-Fi using my T-Mobile card.

Food and Beverages

United did an excellent job serving food on the flight, offering various dinner options, including chicken, beef, and pasta. I had the chicken cacciatore, accompanied by a green salad and a brownie for dessert. While it wasn't gourmet, it was perfectly acceptable for economy class standards.

In the middle of the flight, the crew served a hot sandwich, although the nutritional content seemed a bit questionable. Breakfast was served about 45 minutes before landing, with options for eggs or pancakes. I was particularly impressed with the Illy coffee served on board, which was robust and flavorful.

Service and Cleanliness

Throughout the flight, interaction with the flight attendants was somewhat limited, but they were friendly and efficient, especially in quickly clearing the dining trays after dinner.

United had four restrooms available for passengers in the middle of the cabin, and I appreciated their cleanliness throughout the flight.

Conclusion

Even though I couldn't sleep, it was an efficient flight. The variety of meals served onboard reflects United Airlines' focus on passenger experience. In the future, I wouldn't hesitate to fly with United Airlines again for long-haul flights, especially with kids in tow.
