I recently had the opportunity to fly first class on Qantas, and stepping onto the plane did not disappoint.
Qantas First Class: Entering a World of Luxury
Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to experience first class on a Qantas flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Melbourne (MEL). Honestly, I had been waiting for this moment for nearly twenty years, and stepping onto the plane truly lived up to my expectations.
Cost of Qantas First Class Tickets
The cost of a first class ticket with Qantas varies based on factors such as route, travel dates, and whether it’s a one-way or round-trip ticket. If I had booked a paid ticket from Los Angeles to Melbourne, it would have set me back a staggering $14,788.
Fortunately, I kept an eye on award ticket availability through Seats.aero and found several days with first class seats open. I had a few options for booking, ranging from 110,000 AAdvantage miles from American Airlines to 195,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points.
Check-In and Boarding Procedures
Qantas flights from LAX depart from the Tom Bradley Terminal. First class passengers enjoy priority services at the airport, including expedited check-in, generous baggage allowances, and access to the first class lounge.
I arrived at the airport about three hours before my flight and was the only one at the first class check-in counter. Within just two minutes, my luggage was tagged, and my boarding pass was in hand.
Qantas First Class Lounge
Next, I breezed through TSA PreCheck and headed to the elevator for the Qantas first class lounge. Here, I was served Lallier Reflexion champagne and indulged in their famous calamari. The food was not only delicious but beautifully presented as well.

Experience of First Class Seating
The first class cabin on Qantas's A380 is located at the front of the lower deck, unlike some airlines like Emirates or Singapore Airlines, where first class is typically on the upper deck. The seats here are spacious and comfortable, providing a relaxing atmosphere.
With only 14 seats arranged in a 1-1-1 configuration, the space feels luxurious and private. Seat 2F is affectionately known as the “Harry Potter seat” because it’s located beneath the staircase to the upper deck. Compared to other seats, the ones on the left side of the cabin offer more privacy.
A Comfortable Flying Experience
I sat in the last seat on the left, near the galley, but I wasn’t disturbed by noise or light. Each seat is equipped with personal item hooks, and mine had additional legroom since it was designed for children.
Interestingly, the seats not only provided comfort but also allowed me to create a private space by lowering the divider. I could relax without worrying about the person next to me.
Onboard Service Despite Some Shortcomings
Even though the flying experience was fantastic, I did notice a few areas for improvement, such as the need for an upgrade to the seating to maintain competitive status. Another downside was the rarity of award tickets and the absence of Wi-Fi onboard.
However, the amazing food, professional service, and spacious environment made me forget all about those issues. I truly felt satisfied with this experience.
Conclusion
If given the chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to fly Qantas first class again. What I experienced on this flight was truly worth the wait over the years! I will never forget this moment.
