My inaugural flight on United Airlines' Polaris service provided an excellent business class experience, despite a significant drawback.

My First Flight on Polaris

I recently flew from San Francisco to Newark in United Airlines' Polaris business class. This was my first time experiencing a premium transcontinental flight with them after United rebranded several domestic routes to Polaris.

New Polaris Routes

United Airlines now offers long-haul flights to Hawaii and transcontinental routes between Newark (EWR) and both San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) under the United Polaris brand, replacing the former United Business designation. This means that passengers in the front cabin can access the Polaris Lounge as long as they don't have a 'basic' fare ticket.

Highlight: The Polaris Lounge

The experience at the Polaris Lounge is a major highlight. I arrived at the lounge around 6:00 AM and had never seen it so empty—it was fantastic (though by the time I left around 8:00 AM, it was much busier). I took a refreshing shower and enjoyed a delicious breakfast (omelet, avocado toast, assorted berries, green juice, and cappuccino). After that, I hardly needed to eat anything on the flight (though I still had a little, you know!).

Comparing with Other Airlines

It seems United is trying to catch up with American Airlines, which offers Flagship Lounge access to its business class passengers, or Delta Air Lines with its Delta One Lounge. However, all of this certainly enhances the value of United's business class experience.

Exploring the Seating

On the plane, I found a seat in the middle of the 777-200 cabin, which was the last remaining seat after a ticket was rebooked (due to a flight cancellation). While I prefer window seats, this one was still very comfortable and perfectly reasonable for the five-hour journey to Newark.

In-Flight Breakfast

Don’t worry about going hungry on United's business class flight. Breakfast was served after takeoff (there was no menu, and I couldn't pre-order), and I ordered the steak and eggs, which included filet mignon with cheese eggs. The beef was cooked perfectly medium, making for a hearty and delicious breakfast, accompanied by fruit and yogurt with berries, plus a croissant. However, the ice cream cart didn’t make an appearance on morning flights, but there was a delightful lemon cake served with coffee after breakfast.

Pre-Landing Meal

The most impressive aspect was the meal served before landing. If you fly with American Airlines or Delta Air Lines, you might get a warm cookie before landing. But on United, another meal (with three options) was served before we touched down. I enjoyed a tasty salad with carrots, sweet potatoes, golden grapes, green apples, and green goddess dressing, accompanied by a piece of chicken breast. It was fantastic!

Other Notable Points

  • A utility kit with noise-canceling headphones was provided.
  • The in-flight entertainment selection was extensive.
  • The service was excellent.

Major Drawback: Wi-Fi Issues

So, what went wrong? You might have guessed: the Wi-Fi. It was not functioning, which made the flight frustrating for me. The flight departed at 8:45 AM PT, right in the middle of my work hours, and the Panasonic Wi-Fi was down. You might think I depend too much on the Internet, but for me, it’s a decisive factor—it's the main reason I often opt for overnight flights. Perhaps I need to join a 30-day digital detox program, but I really couldn't bear this flight.

Conclusion

Aside from that issue, the flight was truly wonderful. With high-quality services and meals, United Airlines provided a memorable experience for business class passengers. If you’re looking for a domestic flight with top-notch service, don’t hesitate to choose United Airlines for your next trip.
