A Culinary Adventure at Napa Rose in Disneyland

When you think of Disneyland, sipping a thoughtful glass of Merlot might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, Patrick Kirchen, the new wine director at Napa Rose, is determined to change that perception. This renowned restaurant, celebrating its 25th anniversary and recently renovated in April 2025, is once again the centerpiece of attraction in the park.

In the past, Napa Rose primarily attracted a select local crowd who came to enjoy a glass of wine while relaxing at the bar. But now, the restaurant is buzzing with a fresh energy, aiming to provide diners with a dining experience that stands in stark contrast to the simple treats like Dole Whip or macaroni and cheese.

A Unique Ambiance

It’s no secret that Napa Rose's previous decor had become outdated. The new design is sophisticated yet warm, featuring a Craftsman style with dark woods and luxurious golden-brown tones. Notably, the decor includes images that highlight the history of California’s wine industry, a departure from the cartoonish motifs like Mickey Mouse that are common in other park restaurants.

Above the plush sofas in the new lounge area hang golden paintings depicting the history of famous grapes like Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. The chandeliers are designed to mimic grape clusters, and abstract images of California's landscape are woven into the carpets.

Additionally, the restaurant boasts an impressive display of 3,800 bottles of wine in a climate-controlled glass cabinet, which helps to divide the spacious area into cozy private rooms.

A Professional Team

Patrick Kirchen has made it his mission to train 56 staff members, including bartenders, servers, and chefs, who all participated in a 10-week sommelier certification course before the restaurant reopened. Each team member passed the course and can now suggest wine pairings for every dish on the menu, from hearty meats to seasonal pasta.

This training program has been so successful that Disney is considering expanding the advanced sommelier training to other restaurants in Disneyland, such as Club 33 and Carthay Circle.

An Exciting Wine Journey

Even if you're not a wine enthusiast, Napa Rose aims to change your mind. Two new outdoor areas overlooking Disney California Adventure are designed to attract visitors who may not be particularly interested in wine.

Kirchen emphasizes, “We focus on listening and not making this experience intimidating.” He views himself as a guide on each guest's wine journey, asking about their favorite movies or memorable meals to better understand their preferences.

The Story Behind Each Bottle

The restaurant doesn’t just stop at wine pairings with food. Kirchen has created a database for staff about the winemakers he meets during his visits to California’s vineyards. Details about how the grapes are grown, whether they are organic, can all influence the diners' choices.

Working with Disneyland has provided a significant opportunity for the winemakers he wishes to support. “We are fortunate to have the chance to support the winemakers we love,” he shares.

Exceptional Cuisine at Napa Rose

As for the menu, Napa Rose goes beyond the standard park fare. At the bar, the cocktail program incorporates kitchen scraps, such as strawberries soaked in vodka that are crushed into a powder. The popular chef's table experience remains, but now guests can reserve it online, offering more opportunities to indulge.

The famous Smiling Tiger salad has been revamped into the Laughing Tiger, a spicy dish featuring beef and coconut sauce, available only on the lounge menu. Meanwhile, the new Wagyu steak has become a favorite, served with grape sauce and seasonal lightly fried fish, topped with lemon foam. Although the prices are a bit higher than typical park meals, Kirchen believes diners are ready for it.

“There are so many layers of elevated experiences,” Kirchen observes. “This is the pinnacle of accessible culinary experiences at the resort.”
