Discovering Tonkatsu Daiki
Tonkatsu is one of my favorite dishes—who can resist those crispy, juicy pork cutlets, right? However, indulging too often can get a bit overwhelming, so I usually save it for special occasions. When I heard that Tonkatsu Daiki from Osaka, Japan, had opened its first branch in Ngee Ann City, I knew I had to check it out immediately.
Upon arrival, I was taken aback by the unique decor. The restaurant is designed like a mini JR train, complete with cozy seating, handrails, a route map, and screens simulating the streets of Japan whizzing by. It felt like I was truly in Osaka—what a delightful experience!
Ambiance and Atmosphere
As I stepped inside, I was transported to a bustling street in Dotonbori. The design concept cleverly makes diners feel like they are on a “journey” from Ngee Ann City straight to Osaka. Brilliant, right? But let’s be honest, a beautiful space alone isn’t enough; the food has to be delicious too!
Top-Notch Tonkatsu Menu
Tonkatsu Daiki uses pork from Hokkaido, renowned for its tenderness and balanced fat content. The chefs here minimize the use of spices to preserve the natural flavor of the meat. Each piece of pork is fried with precision; it’s not just a matter of tossing it in the pan until golden, but rather an art form. Each cut is coated in flour, egg, and Japanese panko before being fried over low heat for that perfect doneness.

Experience Tonkatsu Osaka
I started with the Classic Rosu Tonkatsu Set (S$29 for 150g, S$33 for 200g). The rosu (pork loin) featured beautiful marbling and rich flavor. Each slice was incredibly juicy and fatty without being overwhelming. The crispy outer coating was absolutely perfect—no complaints here!
I also tried the Classic Hire Tonkatsu Set (S$29 for 120g, S$34 for 180g). Who would have thought that lean pork could taste so amazing? It was tender and sweet, far from the dry and bland texture I had feared. Plus, if you’re not a fan of the typically sweet Japanese curry, you must try the Katsu Curry (S$28 for 120g)—it’s spicier and saltier, and just as exciting!
Complete Meal Experience
Each tonkatsu set comes with rice, a bowl of miso soup, finely shredded lettuce, pickles, and three different dipping sauces. You can enjoy it as is or add a sprinkle of Himalayan salt, homemade mustard, or traditional tonkatsu sauce to your liking. After savoring both dishes, I felt pleasantly satisfied without being stuffed. It was truly unbelievable!
Quality Recognized
Perhaps that’s why Tonkatsu Daiki has been recognized by Michelin for four consecutive years—so well-deserved! If you find yourself in Singapore, don’t miss the chance to visit Ngee Ann City and enjoy this renowned dish from Osaka. It’s truly an unmissable experience for any Japanese food enthusiast!
