Discovering Boone, North Carolina

Every winter, people from all over the world flock to mountain towns in the western United States to hit the slopes. I’ve been wanting to learn how to ski for quite some time, but honestly, jumping into the famous ski resorts of Colorado, Utah, or Montana felt a bit overwhelming for a beginner like me. So, I decided to head to Boone, North Carolina.

Boone isn’t just home to Appalachian State University; it’s also the perfect destination for those new to skiing. With affordable prices and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to larger resorts, it’s an ideal place to get started. Last winter, I spent some time at Appalachian Ski Mountain learning to ski. With a little planning, skiing here can cost around $100 a day. Boone also has nearby areas like Beech Mountain Resort, which are much less crowded than those in the Rocky Mountains.

Getting Started with Skiing

My first skiing experience was like a crash course in all the necessary gear. Before the trip, I reached out to a few experienced friends to find out what to rent and bring along. I made sure to pack warm clothing and rented essential equipment like boots and a helmet.

That morning, the weather in Boone was surprisingly warm, almost like spring. By the end of the lesson, our entire class had shed our jackets and gloves to start practicing downhill skiing. I even spotted a few talented skiers wearing just t-shirts, clearly prepared for the area’s unpredictable temperature changes.

Relaxing in Boone

If skiing isn’t really your thing, Boone still offers plenty of fun activities. For example, you can try snow tubing at Beech Mountain. And if you’re looking to explore the local food scene, Boone won’t disappoint with its rich variety of restaurants worth trying.

Chef Andy Long shared that the area boasts many quality restaurants and exceptional culinary talent. “The whole region is like a hidden gem,” Long proudly stated. The Over Yonder restaurant stands out with its menu that beautifully combines Appalachian Southern and Louisiana cuisine.

When in Boone, don’t miss breakfast at Troy’s 105 Diner or Betty’s Biscuits—places inspired by the vintage charm of the 1950s. And if you’re craving Italian, make sure to stop by The Beacon for homemade pasta and pizza.

Setting Realistic Goals

Skiing with my son made me realize that this is not just an opportunity for bonding, but also a way to create a foundation for a new activity that our whole family can enjoy together for years to come.

Our instructor pointed out that most beginners don’t continue skiing, but I was determined not to be part of that majority. After a day on the slopes, I set a new goal: to make skiing a lifelong passion for my family.
