When the weather turns chilly, there's nothing like a warm bowl of soup or porridge, and Botak Cantonese Porridge is the perfect place to indulge in delicious Cantonese-style congee.
Discovering Botak Cantonese Porridge
As the cold weather settles in, all I crave are hot soups and porridge to keep warm. On a stormy day at Our Tampines Hub, my cravings intensified. My destination? Botak Cantonese Porridge, a renowned spot for Cantonese congee that used to be known as Botak Delicacy.
This family-run establishment has its main branch in Tampines, along with additional locations in Punggol and Bedok. Upon arriving at the Tampines branch, I was greeted by a friendly trio – two uncles and an auntie. I was particularly impressed by the auntie in the kitchen, deftly managing three pots of porridge simultaneously. This efficiency explains why the place is always buzzing with customers yet never feels overcrowded. Everything is handled swiftly.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet the owner, affectionately nicknamed ‘Botak,’ which inspired the restaurant's name. The manager explained the story behind the name quite seriously, devoid of any humor. Setting aside the small talk, my stomach was growling as I awaited two enormous bowls of congee. Time to dig in!
Porridge You Should Try at Botak
When it comes to Cantonese porridge, I opted for the Century Egg and Minced Pork Congee (S$4). I can’t understand why some people don’t like century eggs; I absolutely adore them. The small pieces have a jelly-like texture. Interestingly, when eaten alone, their strong flavor can be overwhelming, but when combined with the congee, everything blends harmoniously without overpowering one another.
I also added a raw egg (S$0.60) to my steaming bowl of congee. Mixing it in creates a richer flavor profile. Combined with fried shallots and chives, the bowl is simple yet incredibly fragrant. I found it a bit difficult to spot the minced pork, despite it being one of the main ingredients. However, when I took a bite, the succulent pieces of meat were definitely present.

Additionally, there was a hint of ginger that was subtle yet noticeable. To be honest, I’m not a fan of ginger; I can only tolerate it steeped in honey tea. Now, I can add this congee to my very short list of ginger-infused dishes I enjoy. The dish concluded with some deep-fried dough sticks that sank into the congee after I mixed everything together. To my surprise, whenever I fished out a dough stick, it remained crispy. I had expected them to become soggy, so this pleasantly surprised me.
Trying a Bit of Everything Congee
Still feeling hungry, I ordered the Mixed Congee (S$4.80), which is a simple way to enjoy nearly everything Botak Cantonese Porridge has to offer. I won’t go into detail about the dough sticks, century egg, and minced pork since I’ve already mentioned them, so let’s explore the other ingredients.
In my bowl, I found four slices of squid. I felt this was the weakest ingredient, as its flavor didn’t stand out in the mix. At least it wasn’t overly chewy and had a decent crunch when bitten into. I also encountered two slices of chicken gizzard, which made me a bit anxious. I’m not a fan of them; while I don’t dislike them as much as ginger, I wouldn’t choose to eat them if given an option. Unfortunately, I bit into a dry piece that I didn’t enjoy.
The bowl contained a delightful combination of shredded chicken and sliced pork, along with a meatball. Among these, I must say the meatball was the star of the show. Homemade, it didn’t have that frozen meat flavor; instead, it was a perfect blend of fatty and lean meat. I just wish they offered more than one meatball!
Final Thoughts
If I hadn’t been dining alone, I definitely would have ordered a bowl of Thai Fish Congee (S$5.30) or Seafood Congee (S$6.50) to try something else. But with this wonderful experience, I will surely return. While I really enjoyed Botak Cantonese Porridge, it’s important to manage expectations. Each bowl is quite generous in size but doesn’t contain a lot of ingredients, some of which are handmade. The prices are also very reasonable, with most dishes under S$5.
Even though I brought along some soy sauce, I never felt the need to use it. Each bowl was already packed with flavor. Nevertheless, this remains a humble bowl of congee without any complex additions. So, if you’re looking for a simple yet delicious bowl of Cantonese porridge, I can confidently recommend this place.
Conclusion
Botak Cantonese Porridge truly left me feeling delighted and satisfied. I will definitely be back next time.
