Explore whether credit cards offer real value or are just bland perks. A comparison between the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Are Credit Cards Losing Their Appeal?

I've heard many people complain that credit card rewards have become dull. However, the truth is they only feel lackluster when we fail to find real value in them.

The Trend of Premium Credit Cards

Cards like the American Express Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve are increasing their annual fees, but in return, they offer more enticing benefits. This makes using the cards a bit complicated and sometimes feels more like work than enjoyment.

Attractive Perks

However, the Amex Platinum stands out. They provide a wealth of credits, such as benefits at high-end restaurants and hotels, and even dining services. Their card fee becomes easy to “offset” when I take advantage of these offers.

Just Use the Card

What I love most is the credit offered through Resy, which includes thousands of participating restaurants. I no longer have to worry as much about spending just to earn points. In short, if the perks are appealing enough, I feel they deliver real value.

What Makes Chase Sapphire Reserve Special?

Compared to Amex, Chase Sapphire Reserve has its own strengths. They raise their annual fee but don’t offer as many robust perks as Amex. I find myself working harder to make the most of the benefits they provide.

Challenges When Using the Card

For example, there’s a $300 credit for travel or dining, but very few restaurants qualify. Or, the hotel discounts require a minimum two-night stay, which not everyone can meet.

Not Everyone Benefits

Even though you only need to spend $75,000 in a year to unlock special perks, not everyone has that kind of spending requirement. For me, this card is fantastic because I frequently travel and dine out, but it may not suit many others.

The Experience of Using the Card

I’ve noticed that once I’ve “covered” the card’s cost, using the dining or travel perks becomes a joy. There are a few restaurants in Austin that I love, and the $150 credit from the card will help me enjoy a free meal.

Recent Offers from Chase

Chase recently announced a $250 hotel credit for bookings at certain brands starting in 2026. This makes using the card easier and feels less like a hassle.

Conclusion

Chase Sapphire Reserve is indeed a good card for spending, with numerous benefits like access to airport lounges and more. Overall, both cards have their own pros and cons, and I plan to continue using both in different ways to maximize the benefits they offer.
