This recipe takes about 35 minutes to prepare, making it perfect for a cozy dinner after a busy day. If you have leftover pork hock, that’s even better—it adds an extra layer of appeal to the soup!

How to Make Lentil Soup with Pork Hock

First, I’ll heat a large pot on the stove and add a bit of vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, I toss in chopped onions, celery, carrots, and garlic, sautéing them for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and translucent. Next, I add lentils, chicken broth, water, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme to the pot, stirring well before bringing it to a gentle boil.

Once the soup is simmering, I add in the chopped pork hock. This dish needs to cook for about 30 minutes until the lentils are tender. I keep tasting until the lentils are soft but still hold their shape—that’s when it’s just right!

Tips for Cooking Lentil Soup

Brown lentils are the best choice for this soup as they cook easily and maintain a good texture. I also recommend chopping the vegetables evenly to ensure they cook at the same rate. Feel free to add any vegetables you like, such as spinach or zucchini—they work wonderfully!

While cooking, make sure the broth is simmering gently but not boiling too hard. If the heat is too low, the lentils will take longer to cook. I usually add spices like paprika and thyme, but you can also include garlic powder or bay leaves according to your taste!

Using Pork Hock

Although I typically use cooked pork hock, feel free to use fresh if you have it! Fresh pork hock will impart a unique smoky flavor to the soup. If you opt for fresh pork hock, you should cook it a bit longer—around an hour—to let the flavors meld beautifully.

Quick Soup Preparation with an Instant Pot

If you’re using an Instant Pot, set it to the sauté function. When the pot is hot, add oil, onions, celery, carrots, and garlic, sautéing for about 5 minutes. Then, add all the remaining ingredients, seal the lid, and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes. After that, allow the pot to release naturally.

Slow Cooker Method

If you’re using a slow cooker, you don’t need to add oil. Just combine all the ingredients in the pot and stir well. Cook on high for about 3 hours. If you can, add a bit of fresh pork hock for extra flavor!

Enjoying Your Soup

This soup is delightful when paired with bread; I often make Parker House rolls or homemade biscuits, which complement it perfectly. Additionally, a fresh salad or roasted vegetables are great choices to add color and crunch to your meal.
