Explore the price differences when shopping for groceries in JB and Singapore, along with money-saving tips for travelers from Vietnam.
Why Consider Shopping in JB?
If you and your family or friends frequently cross the bridge for daily groceries and essentials, you might have heard that prices in JB (Johor Bahru) are significantly lower than in Singapore. But is that true? To find out, I visited NTUC FairPrice Xtra in Singapore and compared prices with Lotus's at KSL City Mall in JB.
Grocery Prices: A Real Comparison
I compared prices for 10 essential items commonly purchased by Singaporeans, using an exchange rate of S$1 = RM3.105. All prices have been converted to Singapore Dollars for easier comparison. It's important to note that the promotional prices at FairPrice are only valid for three days after this article is published, so I used the original prices for a more accurate comparison.
Price Comparison Table
| Item | FairPrice Price (S$) | Lotus's Price (S$) |
|---|---|---|
| Disinfectant | 17.90 | 18.65 |
| Eggs | 2.85 | 2.38 |
| Detergent | 7.60 | 4.61 |
| Instant Noodles | 2.67 | 1.19 |
| Toilet Paper | 6.45 | 2.32 |
| Sanitary Pads | 6.27 | 4.20 |
| Cooking Oil | 8.19 | 4.98 |
| White Rice | 7.05 | 4.19 |
| Dish Soap | 2.78 | 2.89 |

Detailed Analysis of Each Item

Helpful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you’re in Vietnam and planning a trip to JB, note that obtaining a visa is quite simple for Vietnamese citizens; you can apply for a 30-day tourist visa at the border. For transportation, you can fly directly from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur and then take a bus or taxi to JB. Flight prices typically range from 1,500,000 VND to 3,000,000 VND depending on the season.
Additionally, dining in JB is very affordable. A meal can cost as little as around 60,000 VND, making it a popular destination for Vietnamese travelers seeking culinary experiences and shopping at reasonable prices.
Overall Assessment
Based on the results above, it’s clear that most grocery items in JB are cheaper, with a few exceptions. It’s no surprise that many Singaporeans choose JB as their shopping destination. I hope you have an enjoyable experience when visiting JB and save more on your expenses!
