Pondok Santapan Larkin: A Culinary Gem for Breakfast in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru (JB) is not just famous for its entertainment spots; it’s also a paradise for breakfast lovers. If you find yourself in JB, make sure to visit Pondok Santapan Larkin, one of the most popular breakfast destinations in the area. I stopped by around 9 AM and was greeted by a bustling crowd, with long lines of eager diners waiting at the entrance. This clearly shows that this eatery is a local favorite.

Convenient Self-Service System

Pondok Santapan Larkin operates on a self-service system, making it easy for you to dive into the culinary experience. If you’re in the mood for hot dishes, simply place your order at the counter. Additionally, there are pre-prepared items like Kueh Tiaw Goreng (3 RM), Makaroni Goreng (3 RM), and Jemput-Jemput (1 RM for 3 pieces) that are great for a quick grab. Don’t forget to pay before taking your food to the table and select your drinks at the same counter!

Must-Try Dishes

The menu is packed with enticing options that made it hard for me to choose. I decided to follow some online recommendations and tried the famous Roti Arab (4 RM). This dish comes with two pieces of bread, served with either chicken or beef curry (I opted for beef) and sambal. The bread was soft, with a crispy exterior and fluffy inside, reminiscent of fried dough but even tastier.

The beef curry had a mild flavor, though I wished it had a bit more spice. The sambal added a special touch of sweetness. At this price point, it was a perfect start to my breakfast!

Johor Laksa: A Taste of Home

Having tasted Laksa Johor in Kuala Lumpur, I was eager to try the authentic version of this dish in its hometown. Priced at 9 RM, the portion was generous, with spaghetti noodles soaked in a fragrant fish broth, accompanied by cucumber, bean sprouts, red onions, and daun kesum (Vietnamese coriander). Each plate comes with sambal belacan and lime to enhance the flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. However, the broth was a bit thinner than I expected.

Soto Bergedil: A Rich Combination of Flavors

Finally, I ordered a bowl of Soto Bergedil (7.50 RM), which offers three starch options: bee hoon, mee, and nasi impit. I chose bee hoon, and the serving was quite reasonable for the price. The Soto is topped with bean sprouts, roasted peanuts, fried onions, Chinese celery, and a type of fried potato cake called bergedil. It’s served with sambal kicap. Bergedil is a crispy potato cake typically made with just seasoning like salt and pepper.

Final Thoughts on the Culinary Experience

Overall, Soto Bergedil at Pondok Santapan Larkin was the standout dish among the three I tried. The Roti Arab was tasty but not particularly unique. Although Laksa Johor wasn’t my favorite, there are plenty of other dishes to explore here. From this experience, it’s easy to see why Pondok Santapan Larkin has become a beloved spot for locals. While some might find the prices slightly high by Johor standards, the quality and flavors certainly justify it.
