Discover Pondok Makan Indonesia, a place serving delicious and affordable dishes in Bugis, Singapore.
Discover Pondok Makan Indonesia
Located within the Albert Food Centre in Bugis, I stumbled upon Pondok Makan Indonesia, a standout stall featuring signature dishes from Malaysia. The stall itself is quite simple, with a menu board displayed on the glass case, but that doesn’t detract from the allure of the delicious plates of noodles, tofu, and skewers of meat on display.
Must-Try Dishes at Pondok Makan
When I asked for recommendations, the staff confidently informed me that customers could choose according to their personal preferences. This reassured me as I decided to sample several items from the menu. First up was my personal favorite - Mee Siam (S$3.50), featuring thin white noodles that perfectly absorbed the flavorful broth. The broth had a sweet and sour taste, complemented by fermented soybeans, tofu, and a boiled egg. This dish exuded warmth and comfort, making it hard for me to stop once I started eating.
Next, I tried the Mee Rebus (S$3.50), a dish with a broth made from sweet potatoes. The velvety broth enveloped the thick yellow noodles, giving the sensation of being wrapped in a warm blanket. The flavors were well-balanced, neither too salty nor too sweet, just simply delicious. Paired with egg and tofu, it was truly a treat.
Other Special Dishes
I also sampled Tahu Goreng (S$3.50), a straightforward dish featuring large tofu pieces, bean sprouts, and cucumber. The highlight was the sweet peanut sauce, which, while not overly thick, was fragrant and had a nutty flavor. The tofu was lightly fried on the edges, providing a crispy texture without being tough. Each piece of tofu was indeed a perfect addition to the meal.

Famous Lamb Satay
After exploring the dishes at Pondok Makan, I couldn’t miss the Lamb Satay (S$0.80 per skewer) recommended by Michelin. This dish impressed with its translucent layer of fat nestled between two pieces of lean meat, making everyone eager to take a bite. The lamb was tender yet firm, and the beautifully charred fat melted in my mouth. The accompanying sauce was mild and thicker than the peanut sauce served with Tahu Goreng, adding a richer and more savory flavor to the dish.
I also tried the Beef Satay (S$0.80 per skewer), but it felt a bit chewier than the lamb. Perhaps it's because the beef used more lean meat, but when dipped in the peanut sauce, the flavor was still fantastic.
Conclusion
Pondok Makan Indonesia is a simple yet cozy eatery specializing in delicious homemade dishes. I was impressed by the unpretentious meals that offered a delightful and warm experience. If you’re on the lookout for authentic Malaysian cuisine in Singapore, this is definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss!
