Stumbling upon Laifaba, a wanton noodle shop nestled in the Bukit Batok industrial area, left me pleasantly surprised by its outstanding quality.

Introducing Laifaba

When I first heard about Laifaba, it felt like I had uncovered a hidden treasure right in the heart of Bukit Batok. This wanton noodle shop is tucked away within an industrial zone, yet the atmosphere is always buzzing with activity. The wanton noodles here are not only appealing because of their flavor but also for several intriguing reasons.

A Cozy Atmosphere

Upon entering Laifaba, I was captivated by its charming retro décor. The warm yellow lighting creates a friendly and inviting ambiance. The signage, decorative posters, and large round tables evoke the lively spirit of a Chinese family gathering during Lunar New Year.

Signature Dishes at Laifaba

Of course, I couldn't miss trying Laifaba's specialty wanton noodles, priced around 12.80 SGD. Here, you can choose between lean pork, fatty pork, or a combination of both. I opted for the mixed portion to savor the flavors of both types of meat. A delightful highlight is the addition of ajitsuke tamago, a marinated soft-boiled egg, which elevates the dish even further.

Location and Distinct Flavors

While the prices are slightly higher, they remain reasonable compared to the quality of dishes served at other upscale restaurants. The char siew here is truly a standout, boasting an enticing aroma and a glossy appearance. Notably, this char siew is made from the pork shoulder, considered the tastiest cut with an ideal balance of fat and lean meat. Each bite melts in your mouth, making it an exceptional experience.

Enjoying Wantons and Broth

The wantons are modestly sized but packed with rich flavors that perfectly complement the wanton noodle sauce. Additionally, my bowl included a crispy fried wanton that was crunchy and aromatic. The sauce has a light sweetness and a smoky flavor that clings to the chewy noodles. I believe the delightful taste of the grilled char siew plays a significant role in the richness of this sauce.

A New Experience at Legend Wanton Mee

Recently, I also tried wanton noodles at a new spot called Legend Wanton Mee, priced at around 5.50 SGD. This dish comes with a unique collagen broth made from pork bones, featuring a beautiful ivory color. Although the broth is enriched with ingredients like dried scallops for added depth, it felt somewhat bland compared to the other flavors present.

Tempting Shrimp Dumplings

I couldn't resist trying the shrimp dumplings served with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce, priced at 12 SGD for five pieces. While the price is a bit steep, the quality will surely satisfy you. The shrimp filling is seasoned and includes black mushrooms and green onions. The delightful crunch and moist filling create a fantastic experience, especially when paired with the garlic vinegar sauce.

Final Thoughts on Laifaba

In conclusion, I am genuinely impressed with Laifaba – a place that enchanted me from my very first visit. Not only is the food quality exceptional, but the service is also top-notch. The wanton noodles at Laifaba are truly different from anything I've had before. With the harmonious blend of sauce, char siew, and noodles, each bowl is perfection. Despite the slightly higher prices and its somewhat hidden location, Laifaba will definitely have me returning for more delicious dishes.
