Relaxing Days in Montreuil-sur-Mer and Boulogne
I recently had a delightful short trip to Montreuil-sur-Mer and Boulogne, where the essence of France truly envelops you. Montreuil-sur-Mer is located about 45 miles south of Calais, away from the coast, yet it offers a rich tapestry of culinary and cultural experiences. This charming town sits along the Canche River, nestled in the beautiful Vallées d’Opale region.
Exploring Montreuil-sur-Mer
I was absolutely enchanted by Montreuil, with its ancient fortress walls and cobblestone streets. Though small, this town has an allure that captivates anyone who visits, making it perfect for a short getaway or a scenic road trip. I strolled through its winding streets and visited the citadel, which was rebuilt during the reign of Louis XIV—a must-see attraction!
A Culinary Highlight
Montreuil has earned a solid reputation among food lovers thanks to its quality restaurants. I chose to stay at Les Hauts de Montreuil, a cozy hotel from the Logis de France chain that boasts warm hospitality and delicious meals at its restaurant, Le Patio. It’s just a short walk to the town’s ramparts and the main square.
If you prefer to prepare your own meals or grab a quick bite, Montreuil offers a plethora of food shops, ranging from bakeries and wine shops to butchers and cheese stores. A great tip is to join the Opal Coast Food Tours run by a lovely English couple, where you can discover the best food shops and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Back to Boulogne
After exploring Montreuil, I returned to Boulogne, home to France's largest fishing port and the Nausicaa aquarium. Established in 1991, Nausicaa aims to raise public awareness about marine environments and features the largest aquarium in Europe. I spent three hours there, and the time flew by as I marveled at a stunning variety of marine life.
Discovering Old Boulogne
Don’t miss a stroll up to Vieux Boulogne, where the striking Notre-Dame Basilica stands. I admired its beautiful interior and explored the recently renovated crypt. Next, I visited the old castle, now a museum showcasing fascinating collections including paintings, Roman sculptures, and Egyptian artifacts.
Culinary Delights in Boulogne
Like Montreuil, Boulogne did not disappoint with its array of accommodation and dining options. I stopped by the famous cheese shop of Philippe Olivier to prepare for a dinner party, and I couldn't resist visiting the seafood stalls at the harbor. For a memorable dinner, be sure to book a table at La Matelote, where delectable fish dishes are served any time.
Returning by the Coast
On my way back to Calais, I decided to take the coastal route, stopping at Ambleteuse to see the 17th-century fort. The drive also passes through the Site des Deux Caps, an area renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty featuring two famous capes. On clear days, you can even spot the English coastline from here.
Useful Information
I traveled by car using the LeShuttle service, which only took 35 minutes to get from Folkestone to Calais. From Calais, it's a straightforward 30-minute drive to Boulogne and another 30 minutes to Montreuil-sur-Mer. If you're seeking travel information, check out websites like www.visitpasdecalais.com.
This trip was wonderful—not only did I savor French cuisine, but I also explored the unique culture of this beautiful region. Until next time, Montreuil and Boulogne!
