Visit Westlake for a taste of classic zi char flavors and enjoy a 52% discount on select dishes until the end of May.

A Must-Visit Spot

Westlake is a delightful haven for zi char enthusiasts, operating since 1974. Located on the second floor at 4 Queen's Road, the restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for diners.

Founded by Mr. Lim Tong Law, a renowned physical education teacher from Hwa Chong Institution, he left his teaching career at the age of 50 to pursue his passion for cooking. After 52 years, the restaurant has been handed down to the second generation—Mr. Robert Lim and his siblings—who have maintained its quality standards, making it a beloved neighborhood destination.

The Third Generation Takes the Helm

Currently, the third generation, Mr. Matthew Lim, has followed in his grandfather's footsteps, leaving a banking career to preserve the family legacy. Mr. Matthew continues to uphold the classic flavors that have captivated diners for decades.

We sampled three new dishes, starting with the Stir-Fried Minced Pork Noodles (S$10/S$16/S$20), also known as zha jiang mian. Fun fact: the recipe for this dish was a closely guarded family secret from Mr. Matthew. The noodles are chewy and smooth, paired with a rich soy sauce that delivers a truly memorable umami flavor.

Irresistible Delicacies

You may have tried Frog Legs Stir-Fried with Chili (S$25/S$37/S$48) at various zi char restaurants. However, at Westlake, this dish is elevated beyond ordinary; it comes served with chee cheong fun, soft rice rolls that soak up the delicious sauce, making each bite utterly satisfying.

If you're looking for a flavorful light dish, the Stir-Fried Green Chili Tofu (S$15/S$19/S$23) is an excellent choice. This dish is sautéed with black bean sauce, minced meat, and fresh green chili, maintaining its crispness when served. Notably, the sauce follows a recipe from Mr. Lim Tong Law, a family secret passed down to his grandson.

Signature Main Dishes

Of course, a meal at Westlake wouldn’t be complete without the timeless favorite—Braised Pork Belly with Bao (S$20 for 5 pieces, S$37 for 10 pieces). This dish features pork belly imported from the Netherlands and Germany, known for its perfect meat-to-fat ratio. When paired with fresh vegetables and fluffy bao, this combination truly captivates every diner!

My personal favorite is the Hot and Sour Soup (S$16/S$20/S$28) with tofu, mushrooms, black fungus, and an optional seafood addition, simmered in homemade chicken broth for a full 24 hours. Each spoonful delivers a light tanginess and an irresistible appeal.

Other Special Dishes

I also adore the Butter Prawns (S$38/S$58/S$76), which have traded in boring breadcrumbs for shredded coconut. Each fresh, sweet prawn harmonizes perfectly with the crispy coconut bits—absolutely delicious! You can also enjoy other dishes like Westlake Grilled Chicken (S$25/S$43), Hokkien Noodles (S$10/S$16/S$22), and Green Bean Pancakes (S$22) for dessert.

Special Promotion

To celebrate 52 years of operation, Westlake is offering a 52% discount from April 13 to May 29, 2026. This promotion applies to the three new dishes—Stir-Fried Minced Pork Noodles, Frog Legs Stir-Fried with Chili, and Stir-Fried Green Chili Tofu, as well as the Butter Prawns. Note that the discount is only available from Monday to Wednesday and during lunchtime (11am - 2pm) on Thursdays and Fridays.

Hurry over to 4 Queen's Road to indulge in these delightful dishes!
