This post will give you a clearer idea of how to make your way to this stunning locale.

How to Get to Yading?

Fly Directly to Daocheng Yading Airport

Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to get close to Yading. Daocheng Yading Airport is one of the highest airports in the world, sitting at an elevation of 4,411 meters. There are direct flights from major cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, and Kunming, taking only 1 to 2 hours. Ticket prices are around $261. However, once you land, it’s about a two-hour drive to Shangri-La town, so be sure to arrange your transportation in advance, as there aren’t many public buses waiting at the airport.

Take a Bus from Shangri-La, Yunnan

This is the most popular option, especially if you're exploring Yunnan. Starting from Shangri-La city, you’ll need to purchase your bus ticket a day in advance for about 148 CNY. There are two departures each day, but it's best to take the early 8:20 AM bus to enjoy the breathtaking views during the approximately 6-hour journey. You’ll have a one-hour break before arriving, so pack some snacks and water to keep you refreshed.

Bus from Chengdu

If you’re not in a hurry and want to save some money, you can opt for the journey from Chengdu, but prepare yourself for a long trip lasting 12 to 15 hours. Buses depart at 6:30 AM from the Xinnanmen Bus Station in Chengdu and take you to Daocheng. From there, you’ll need to transfer to another bus to reach Shangri-La. Make sure to buy your ticket in advance and mentally prepare for this lengthy and somewhat uncomfortable journey.

Things to Know Before Going to Yading

Book your bus tickets in advance: Especially for foreigners, you can't book tickets through an app; you must go to the bus station to buy your ticket a day ahead. Altitude and health: The elevation here is no joke! Allow your body to acclimatize by resting for a day or two in Daocheng or other high-altitude areas like Dali or Lijiang before heading to Yading.

Clothing and gear: The weather can be quite unpredictable, so be sure to pack warm clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and sun protection gear. Don't forget a water bottle and high-energy snacks. Hiking routes: If you only have one day, skip the easy trails and aim for challenging high routes, such as those from Luorong cattle ranch to Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake. Starting early will also help you avoid crowds and enjoy the landscape in peace.

My Experience from Shangri-La to Yading

On my journey from Shangri-La city in Yunnan to Shangri-La town in Sichuan, I had a bus ride full of emotions.
