A Romantic Night by the Nanhua Bridge
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a night in Fenghuang Ancient Town, a stunning little gem nestled along the Tuo River. Standing on the Nanhua Bridge at night, watching the twinkling lights reflecting on the water, felt like stepping into a magical world straight out of a Studio Ghibli film. The wooden houses lining the river glowed beautifully, creating an atmosphere that was both cozy and vibrant.
Exploring the Ancient Bridges
The ancient bridges here are not just crossings; they are vibrant pieces of the town's history. I was particularly taken with the Xue Bridge, featuring a unique arch design and a two-story pavilion that offers breathtaking views of the river. It’s also a fantastic spot to watch the town light up in the evening, especially if you want to avoid the crowds on the Nanhua Bridge.
Crossing the River on T-Shaped Stones
Not far from Xue Bridge lies a special pathway known as the T-shaped stones, connecting both banks of the river with square stone columns. The sensation of stepping from one stone to another, with the clear river flowing beneath, is truly delightful and perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy photos. Standing there, surrounded by ancient wooden houses, you’ll quickly understand why this place is so beloved by many.
Walking Along the Ancient City Wall
The Fenghuang Ancient Town was once surrounded by a city wall for protection against invasions, though only a few gates and sections of the wall remain today. Strolling along the wall, I felt as if I was traveling back in time, witnessing the marks of history etched in every stone.

When to Visit?
I highly recommend visiting Fenghuang Ancient Town at any time of the year, as it boasts beauty in every season. However, if you can, aim for the autumn months when the green leaves turn golden, creating a breathtaking natural canvas.
How to Get to Fenghuang Ancient Town
To reach the town, you can take a train to the Zhangjiajie station and then catch a bus to Fenghuang. The bus fare is quite reasonable, around 50-60 CNY.
Where to Stay in Fenghuang Ancient Town?
If you’re looking to save some money, Linshuiju Hostel offers decent rates. For a touch of luxury, JI Hotel near Hongqiao Bridge is a great choice. No matter where you decide to stay, make sure you can easily enjoy the town's beauty.
Exploring Fenghuang Ancient Town is not just a travel experience; it’s a journey back in time, where every street and bridge has its own story to tell. The slow-paced and peaceful life here makes me truly want to return once again.
