Marriott began its journey as a humble ginger ale stand and has grown into the largest hotel chain in the world. It's a truly inspiring story!

Marriott: From Ginger Ale Stand to the World's Largest Hotel Chain

As Marriott recently transitioned from Pepsi to Coca-Cola after 34 years, I was reminded of a fascinating story about its history that many might not know. It all began not with hotels, but with a ginger ale stand.

An Unexpected History

Many know Bill Marriott, the man behind the brand that bears his name, or that the JW Marriott brand derives from his full name, “John Willard.” Some might even be aware of its ties to the Mormon faith and that its first hotel opened in the 1950s. However, the story of Marriott is filled with even more surprises.

The First Ginger Ale Stand

In fact, Marriott started off with a ginger ale stand called A&W Root Beer Stand. Before venturing into hotels, they provided food service to airlines. Bill Marriott's journey into the hospitality industry is quite straightforward: he was born in 1900 in Marriott, Utah, into a family of sheep herders.

From a young age, Bill exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit, working with his father at just 8 years old and starting his own business by the age of 13. There were many ups and downs along the way, but I’ll skip to the part where Marriott officially came into being.

Early Success

In 1927, Bill and his wife opened the first A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C. They noticed the popularity of ginger ale stands elsewhere and believed this model would thrive in D.C. Initially, business boomed in the summer, but winter saw a significant drop in customers. To remedy this, they added hot food to the menu and rebranded as "Hot Shoppes."

Business Expansion

By 1928, Bill Marriott opened two more Hot Shoppes and continued to expand. In 1936, Hot Shoppes reached out to airlines to provide in-flight lunch service, a novel idea at the time. Airlines were intrigued, and soon after, the company began supplying meals on flights at Hoover Airport in Washington, D.C.

Transitioning to Hotels

In 1953, Hot Shoppes became a publicly traded company, with its stock selling out in just two hours. By 1957, Bill Marriott shifted focus to the hotel industry, opening the first motor hotel (motel) in Arlington, Virginia. The second property, Key Bridge Marriott, followed in 1959.

Marriott Today

Since then, Marriott has continued to grow into the largest hotel chain in the world today. Interestingly, very few people know that it originated from a ginger ale stand, transitioned to a restaurant serving hot meals, and later became an airline catering company—years before entering the hotel industry.

An Inspiring Story

This is an intriguing and inspiring tale. While Marriott is now the largest hotel chain globally, I feel that the creativity that propelled Marriott to its current success has been lacking for some time. Did you know about this aspect of Marriott's history?
