Volotea: A Low-Cost Airline Breaking New Ground

When it comes to the aviation industry, I’ve never encountered anything quite as unusual as what Volotea, a European low-cost airline, is doing. They are requiring passengers who have already purchased tickets to pay an additional €7 for fuel costs due to rising oil prices. If passengers refuse to pay this fee, they will be denied boarding. It sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it?

Is This Even Legal?

It seems that European law may not easily accept this practice. According to their terms of carriage, airlines are allowed to adjust ticket prices in the event of “extreme” fuel price fluctuations before departure. However, even if passengers were notified of this at the time of booking, many still feel quite aggrieved.

The Discomfort of Flying with Volotea

I personally enjoy flying with Volotea. They offer interesting routes that might not be available with other airlines, such as the journey from Venice to Nice. However, forcing passengers to pay extra for tickets they’ve already bought leaves me feeling deceived. It’s genuinely frustrating to feel compelled to pay more for what I thought was the final price.

Comparing to Other Airlines

Many other airlines occasionally charge additional fees when there are changes in taxes or airport fees, but most do not apply this to already purchased tickets. For instance, Ryanair and easyJet have clear regulations on this matter. Wizz Air also states that government fees or taxes can be charged to passengers. But Volotea has taken it a step further by imposing extra charges on already purchased tickets, which is truly unprecedented.

Legal Regulations in France

In France, by law, fuel surcharges are not classified as taxes but rather as part of the ticket price. If there is an adjustment to the fuel surcharge, it must be applied at the time of ticket purchase and cannot be changed later. This contradicts what Volotea is currently doing.

Legal Perspective Analysis

Some argue that the terms in Volotea’s contract are legal because they are governed by Spanish law. However, can this justify forcing passengers to pay extra for already purchased tickets? I believe a major airline should not exploit this loophole.

Passenger Opinions

If Volotea wants to implement a fee based on operational costs, that’s not inherently wrong. The issue lies in how to determine this amount clearly and fairly. Passengers have the right to know that their ticket prices are affected by current oil prices and to be informed transparently.

Why No Ticket Price Adjustments?

Typically, airlines do not make adjustments to ticket prices after they have been sold. They are responsible for delivering the product they have sold and bear the risks associated with price fluctuations. If an airline does not want to take on this risk, they can look into price insurance options.

Investing in Passengers

This airline has a responsibility to clearly inform passengers about any changes related to ticket prices. If they wish to increase prices, passengers should have the option to refuse and receive a full refund of the amount paid. Clearly, this is not a good practice, and most airlines do not operate in this manner.
