If You Can't Get Enough of Exploring Caves

When you think of Vietnam, stunning beaches, lush tropical forests, and majestic mountains often come to mind. However, few know that beneath the surface of this beautiful land lies a treasure trove of natural wonders waiting to be discovered. Any avid traveler worth their salt must experience the thrill of cave exploration in Vietnam at least once.

The Journey to Sơn Đoòng Cave

No discussion of caves in Vietnam would be complete without mentioning Sơn Đoòng Cave. Discovered in 1991 and rediscovered in 2009, it holds the title of the largest cave in the world by cross-section. Each year, adventurers from all over the globe flock to Quảng Bình to take on this awe-inspiring journey.

The Sơn Đoòng expedition is organized by Oxalis, in collaboration with the British Cave Research Association and the Vietnamese government. This multi-day adventure begins with a trek through dense forests and smaller caves before culminating in the grandeur of Sơn Đoòng. The tour accommodates groups of 6 to 10 people and runs from January to August to avoid the rainy season. Anyone wishing to join should prepare their health and wallet, as the cost is around $3,000, and there may be a wait of up to two years to secure a spot.

Hang Va - An equally Exciting Adventure

Hang Va, also located within the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, was first explored in 2012. While it may not be as vast as Sơn Đoòng, Hang Va captivates visitors with its towering limestone pillars that reach about 2 meters in height.

This cave is perfect for beginners and is often paired with a visit to the nearby Hang Nước Nứt. Here, travelers can navigate both dry and wet passages, and even take a refreshing swim in the cool waters to soothe their excitement.

Paradise Cave - Where the Name Says It All

While in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, you cannot miss Paradise Cave. Considered one of the most beautiful spots in Vietnam, this cave boasts a length of 31 kilometers, although visitors can only explore the first kilometer. But that's more than enough to be enchanted by its stunning stalactite formations.

The best way to discover this marvel is by joining a guided tour. After handling your tickets at the entrance, you can choose to take a shuttle or walk the more than one-kilometer trail. Whichever option you select, the effort will be well rewarded as you step into the enchanting world inside the cave.

Phong Nha - A Breeze Through Stony Teeth

Phong Nha is another must-visit destination, even though only the first 400 meters are open to the public. The name "Phong Nha" refers to the impressive limestone formations resembling teeth at the entrance.

To reach the cave, visitors will enjoy a boat ride along the Son River, surrounded by towering limestone mountains rising majestically from the dense forest.

The Tứ Lan Cave System

With over 10 caves, the Tứ Lan cave system served as a backdrop for the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island. Although it is not located in the heart of Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, the 1 to 4-day exploration tours here remain captivating, offering experiences that include hiking, swimming, and delving deep into the earth.

Hang Én - A Stunning Natural Canvas

Hang Én, located within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, is the third-largest cave in the world. Known from the 2015 film Pan, it boasts a maximum height of 100 meters and an average width of 170 meters, offering an unforgettable experience for anyone who steps inside.

The journey to Hang Én lasts two days, taking you through dense forests and to an ideal camping spot by the "sea," where everyone will want to soak in the refreshing blue waters.
