Discovering Huangguoshu Waterfall: A Comprehensive Travel Guide from A to Z

Huangguoshu Waterfall is renowned as the largest waterfall in Asia, boasting a height of 77.8 meters and a width of 101 meters. If you're planning a trip to southern China, this is undoubtedly a must-visit destination. Not only is the waterfall impressive in size, but it also offers a glimpse into Guizhou Province, an area that remains largely untouched by international tourists.

The Huangguoshu scenic area spans over 120 square kilometers, featuring not just the main waterfall but also several smaller falls, caves, and lush limestone landscapes. To help you make the most of your visit, I've compiled all the essential information, from transportation options and accommodations to must-see attractions.

How to Get to Huangguoshu Waterfall

To reach Huangguoshu Waterfall, you can fly into Guiyang and then take a bus or taxi to Anshun, the nearest city to the falls. If you prefer to focus solely on the waterfall without exploring other nearby attractions like Kaili and its beautiful Miao villages, Anshun is the perfect choice for an overnight stay.

Here are some accommodation suggestions in Anshun: Yibai·Yuemei Hotel for budget travelers, Homeinn Plus Hotel for a mid-range option, and several upscale hotels for those seeking more comfort. If you plan to stay in Guiyang to explore additional sites in Guizhou Province, there are also plenty of hotel choices to suit your needs.

Main Attractions at Huangguoshu Waterfall

Main Waterfall

Upon arriving at the waterfall, I recommend starting at the Main Waterfall Area. After purchasing your ticket, you’ll find a shuttle bus at the “Entrance to the Grand Waterfall.” For the adventurous at heart, you can take an escalator down to the Water Cave, which runs behind the waterfall. Just remember to buy your ticket before entering the scenic area.

Once you arrive, follow the path to the escalator, or you can opt to walk down the trail, which takes about 15-20 minutes. As you get closer to the waterfall, the sheer volume of water cascading down and its majestic beauty will leave you in awe. If you want to get even closer, be sure to bring a raincoat, as you will get wet from the mist of the falls.

Doupotang Waterfall

After admiring the main waterfall, you can take a bus to Doupotang Waterfall, located downstream. Although Doupotang is smaller, it still captivates visitors with its scenic walking paths along the river. I found Doupotang to be an ideal spot to relax, as it’s less crowded than the main waterfall.

Additionally, you can encounter various characters from the classic tale "Journey to the West" here, making the visit even more intriguing. There are several unique statues and maps depicting the characters' journey.

Tianxingqiao Area

As you leave Doupotang, don’t forget to stop by the Tianxingqiao Area, known for its unique limestone formations and crystal-clear streams. I absolutely loved exploring this area, with its easy walking paths that felt like stepping into a Chinese Zen garden.

This area requires a bit more walking than Doupotang, but in return, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking natural beauty. Be sure to bring water to stay hydrated while you enjoy your stroll!

Essential Information Before You Go

The ideal time to visit Huangguoshu Waterfall is typically from June to October. During this period, the weather is quite mild and pleasant for sightseeing. Although the area is not overly crowded with tourists, it’s still wise to prepare thoroughly, from entry tickets and your itinerary to any necessary gear.

If you’re like me and want to combine sightseeing with activities such as hiking or splashing around in the streams, make sure you’re ready for the exciting adventures that lie ahead!
