Run by a Singaporean woman and a Taiwanese chef, the eatery showcases recipes learned in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, bringing a rich variety to the dining experience.

During my visit, I tried the saba fish rice (S$7.50) and the salmon rice (S$8.50). I ultimately went with the saba fish rice, drawn in by its appealing presentation. The dish features pearl rice, a beautifully grilled piece of saba, and the option of either a sunny-side-up egg with tomato sauce or a braised egg. Additionally, it comes with bean sprouts and tofu, adding a wonderful richness to the meal.

The saba fish here is truly delicious, with flesh that's sweet and buttery. Just be cautious of the bones, which are fewer than usual. My friend Lily noted that in Taiwan, saba and salmon are generally priced higher, while chicken and pork belly are more common options.

Gua Bao - A Taiwanese Specialty

The gua bao (S$3.80) is another must-try highlight. This popular street food in Taiwan is becoming rarer in night markets. Gua bao consists of a soft, fluffy bun filled with braised pork belly, crushed peanuts, and pickled mustard greens. The richness of the pork makes it enticing, though the saltiness of the pickles can sometimes overpower the dish.

I ordered two gua baos, and I didn’t share! Lily commented that the buns in Taiwan are much softer compared to those here, making me feel like I was eating a memory foam pillow.

Other Dishes at Taiwan Fan Bao

The braised pork rice (S$6) is equally tempting, featuring a generous piece of meat, tomato-braised egg, oyster mushrooms, and leafy greens. The pork belly is perfectly tender and flavorful. Notably, the accompanying sweet and spicy sauce makes the dish familiar to many, especially those accustomed to chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

Lily also mentioned that tomato-braised eggs are a common item in Taiwanese children's lunch boxes, with a hint of sweetness from the tomatoes that enhances the dish.
