Explore Soon Soon Huat, where you can enjoy delightful curry puffs and chee cheong fan that evoke childhood memories. This post provides useful insights about the location and signature dishes.

Introduction to Soon Soon Huat

As a child, I vividly remember the excitement of having breakfast at a nearby café every weekend. One of the family favorites was the curry puff from Soon Soon Huat, where my mom would indulge in the curry puffs while my dad, brother, and I opted for the chee cheong fan. However, after a while, we stopped visiting that café when they relocated to East Coast Rd, which was quite a trek from our home.

Recently, memories of the chee cheong fan from that café came rushing back, sparking a desire to relive those flavors of my childhood. So, I decided to revisit the café with my parents to sample this beloved dish once again.

What to Order at Soon Soon Huat

Upon glancing at the menu, the dishes we came for immediately caught our attention. We ordered a serving of Curry Puff (S$2.50) and two plates of Chee Cheong Fan (S$3.50 each). My dad prefers his chee cheong fan without sauce, so the second plate was served plain. My mom also made sure to order some Chwee Kueh (S$3.80), which wasn’t available at the Kim Tian Rd location.

As I looked at the curry puff and chee cheong fan, my excitement grew. Although I had visited this place many times as a child, this was my first time trying the café's famous curry puff. The curry puff from Soon Soon Huat stood out with its flaky, layered crust, quite different from those at places like Old Chang Kee.

The curry puff truly captivated me from the very first bite. Its crispy exterior melted in my mouth, and unlike my usual concern about feeling heavy after fried foods, that sensation was absent here. The filling was generous, with small pieces of egg inside, making me wonder how I had overlooked this dish for so long.

Flavors in Every Bite

While I expected to need a drink to combat the spiciness, the heat was pleasantly mild, adjusted for those like me who aren’t used to spicy food. Next came my childhood favorite: chee cheong fan. In the past, when I had a sweet tooth, the sweet sauce drizzled over the chee cheong fan was the perfect choice. Now, even though I’m accustomed to lighter flavors, I still couldn’t resist the chee cheong fan. The sweet taste and creamy texture of the rice brought back lovely memories!

I also tried my dad’s chee cheong fan without sauce, and it was equally delicious with a light soy sauce and a hint of sesame fragrance. Finally, I tasted the chwee kueh. This dish offered a delightful balance of sweet and savory from the chai poh (dried radish), with the soft, moist rice cake harmonizing perfectly with the sweet notes of the chai poh. My parents also enjoyed this dish because it had more chai poh and less oil compared to other chwee kueh places.

Experience and Review

When it came to our favorite dishes, we each had our preferences. I struggled to choose between the curry puff and the two plates of chee cheong fan. While I adored the softness of the chee cheong fan, I also loved the crispiness of the curry puff and its flavorful, slightly spicy filling. My mom’s favorite was undoubtedly the chwee kueh for its sweet and salty balance. And of course, my dad held a special place in his heart for his plain chee cheong fan.
