Searching for Authentic Flavors

Are you a fan of street food? If so, you can't miss Sheng Cheng Char Kway Teow, a fantastic spot located at Blk 132 Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore. This place is not only famous for its Char Kway Teow but also holds a special place in the hearts of many locals, especially since it’s close to the writer’s grandmother's house.

If you’ve ever been to this area, you’ve likely heard of Sheng Cheng. This eatery is known for its consistently quality dishes and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. During my recent visit, I noticed that the restaurant is now run by an elderly couple, but the flavors of the food remain as delightful as ever.

Dishes at Sheng Cheng Char Kway Teow

The menu here features just three dishes: Fried Carrot Cake, Char Kway Teow, and Hokkien Mee, all at very reasonable prices (S$3.50 for a small, S$4.50 for a medium, and S$5.50 for a large). I opted for a small portion of Fried Carrot Cake and a small Char Kway Teow. As soon as the dishes arrived, the mouthwatering aroma from the wok was irresistible.

The Unique Flavors of the Dishes

First, I tried the Fried Carrot Cake. It was soft and rich, thanks to the eggs, paired with a sweet flavor from the soy sauce. If you enjoy a bit of heat, don’t hesitate to ask for extra chili; the mild spiciness adds an exciting kick to the dish. Next up was the authentic Char Kway Teow — a perfect blend of golden noodles, bean sprouts, scallops, eggs, and pork fat, not overly sweet or greasy.

What I love most about the Char Kway Teow is the crispy pork fat. While some might argue it's not the healthiest option, indulging every now and then can be a treat. Plus, the dish is surprisingly light and flavorful!
