On May 29, 2026, Sederhana, a renowned Indonesian nasi padang restaurant chain, officially opened its first branch in Singapore. With a rich history spanning 54 years and over 100 locations across Indonesia, Sederhana brings a unique taste of Padang cuisine to the city. The restaurant is located at 738 North Bridge Road, in the Kampong Glam area, which previously housed Warong Nasi Pariaman for over 70 years.

A Cozy and Convenient Space

We arrived at the restaurant around 2 PM, shortly after they distributed 100 free nasi padang meals to customers following Friday prayers. While this gesture was commendable, it made choosing our dishes a bit challenging due to the limited options remaining. The restaurant features two floors, with a spacious dining area on the second floor that is air-conditioned and easily accessible via stairs or a mini elevator. This setup is perfect for those looking to enjoy their meals in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Signature Menu

Our meal began with a plate of nasi padang, which included rendang limpa (beef liver, priced at S$3.50), curry fish (S$4.50), sambal egg (S$1.50), cucumber (free), and rice (S$1), totaling S$10.50. While this price is relatively high for a meal in Singapore, the delightful taste of the rendang limpa made it worthwhile. The rich flavor and sponge-like texture allowed the dish to absorb the spices beautifully.

Food Impressions

As I savored the dish, I found the flavors of the rendang limpa to be rich and reminiscent of stewed duck and pork liver, without any unpleasant aftertaste. The only downside was the presence of small bones in the dish, which required careful eating. Regarding the curry fish, I felt it could have been a bit more robust, as it tasted somewhat bland and slightly fishy.

Second Course

Our next plate featured a serving of rice (S$1), curry chicken (S$6), santan gulai nangka (young jackfruit curry, S$1.50), and bean sprouts (S$1.50), totaling S$10. I noticed the chicken seemed a bit overcooked, lacking the tenderness I expected. The santan gulai nangka is a traditional dish in Padang cuisine, boasting a salty, rich, and slightly sweet flavor. The young jackfruit has a unique texture, similar to that of monkey head mushrooms, making it an interesting addition to the meal.

When to Visit

My experience at Sederhana felt somewhat underwhelming and did not leave a strong impression, possibly due to the grand opening day chaos. I will definitely return another day for a chance to explore a wider variety of dishes. Especially if you're a fan of Indonesian cuisine, the opportunity to enjoy traditional nasi padang here is something to look forward to.
