Join me as we discover the amazing wine regions of Europe. From the ancient history of Georgia to the mysterious vineyards of Romania, each area offers unique cultural experiences.
Distinctive Wine Regions of Europe
One day, I decided to delve into the lesser-known wine regions of Europe. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are many places not only producing delicious wines but also offering unique cultural experiences. Regions like Georgia, Romania, and Moldova create award-winning bottles while embodying a rich wine culture.
Georgia: The Cradle of Wine
Once regarded as the birthplace of wine, Georgia boasts a winemaking history that stretches back 8,000 years. They typically use qvevri—large egg-shaped clay vessels buried underground for fermenting grapes. Here, wine is not just a beverage; it's an integral part of the culture, with every family growing grapes and producing their own wine.
In Georgia, drinking wine is a fundamental part of the supra—feasts where a toastmaster raises a glass to celebrate numerous times throughout the meal. With over 500 indigenous grape varieties, Georgian wine is truly more diverse than any other region in the world.
Wine Regions in Georgia
Kakheti, located in eastern Georgia, is considered the heart of wine production, contributing over 70% of the country's output. It’s famous for the Saperavi (red) and Rkatsiteli (white) grape varieties. Kartli, on the other hand, produces lighter, more aromatic wines, highlighting grape varieties like Chinuri and Gori Mtsvane.
Racha-Lechkhumi is a higher altitude region with a unique climate that produces gentle, semi-sweet Khvanchkara wines. Meanwhile, Imereti is known for its diverse wine production, characterized by fresh white wines that are completely different from the tannin-rich bottles found in eastern Georgia.
Experiences in Georgia
I visited family-owned wineries in Kakheti, where I enjoyed tasting their signature Rkatsiteli and Saperavi. Exploring the historic wine bars and cellars in Tbilisi, such as the Karalashvili 1396 cellar that has stood for over 300 years, was an unforgettable experience.

Moreover, I participated in a supra, where the wine was paired with local stews and cheeses, along with churchkhela—a sweet treat made from walnuts.
Romania: The Mystery of Winemaking
Romania has the oldest wine industry in Europe, with a history spanning over 6,000 years. Although it ranks 10th in the world for wine production, most of its products remain unexported. The wine industry here has seen many ups and downs from the Roman era to its resurgence in the 21st century.
With only about 5-6% of production being exported, many are still unaware of the distinctive bottles made from local grape varieties like Fetească Regală and Fetească Neagră. The Oltenia and Muntenia regions are renowned for producing Romania's most famous red wines, with vineyards nestled on the slopes of the Carpathians.
Wine Regions in Romania
Transylvania is a cooler climate region suitable for producing crisp white and sparkling wines. Meanwhile, Moldovan Hills, with around 70,000 hectares of vineyards, is known for its dry and semi-dry white wines like Fetească Albă.
Dobrogea is the sunniest region, ideal for grape growing and wine production. The wines here primarily consist of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, famous for their light sweetness and distinctive aromas.
Experiences in Romania
In Romania, I visited the Crama 1777 museum, which showcases the oldest wooden winery. Cycling through the Dealu Mare wine road, savoring wines alongside Romanian delicacies, was an unforgettable experience.
The combination of a wine tour and a visit to the Slanic Prahova salt mine truly made for a remarkable experience. Each region offers unique nuances that you won’t find anywhere else.
