Explore the famous braised meat la mian at Shi Xiang Ge in Bishan, a must-visit spot for street food enthusiasts in Singapore.
Braised Meat La Mian at Shi Xiang Ge
When it comes to Singapore's street food scene, the name Shi Xiang Ge is often mentioned with great respect by locals in Bishan. This restaurant is renowned for its traditional la mian from Shanxi province in China. Although it’s a small eatery, it’s the perfect place to savor exquisite dishes without breaking the bank.
About Shi Xiang Ge
Founded by a former director of Crystal Jade La Mian, Shi Xiang Ge has quickly become one of the most popular dining spots in the area. When I visited, the striking blue porcelain bowls were scattered across the tables, capturing the attention of every diner. Despite the sweltering heat of the day, many people were lined up to enjoy their steaming hot bowls of spicy la mian.
Signature Dishes
I started with the Mala Braised Meat La Mian (S$7.50), opting to switch the la mian for hand-cut noodles for an additional S$1. While not the best-seller, the Beef Noodle (S$7) and Mala Pork Intestine Noodle (S$7.50) are considered the stars of the menu.
In fact, I chose this dish because of its unique blend of braised meat and the bold spiciness of mala. It did not disappoint! Even though I’m not great with spicy food, the rich flavors of the broth helped me power through the numbing sensation from the Sichuan peppercorns. This flavor combination is truly worth a try.
How to Enjoy Your Noodles
Between la mian and hand-cut noodles, I found that the hand-cut noodles paired better with the broth. They were soft, not too thick, and easy to slurp. Each piece of braised meat was tender and buttery, complemented by the tangy notes of Shanxi vinegar, creating an unforgettable dish. The portion was generous enough for two people to share and enjoy.

Minced Meat Noodles
The next dish I tried was the Minced Meat Noodles (S$6.50), a simple yet beloved option. This dish is typically served with la mian. Once mixed, the sauce coated the noodles evenly. This version featured minced meat, firm tofu, and black bean sauce. The balance between sweet and savory was just right, providing a comforting experience for diners.
Pork Bun
Lastly, I had the Pork Bun (S$5.50). While I felt it didn’t quite justify its price, the shredded braised meat filling was delicious, blending both fatty and lean meat, which was fragrant and rich in flavor. However, given the price point, there wasn’t anything particularly standout about it that would make me want to purchase it again.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you plan to visit Shi Xiang Ge, note that this eatery is located in Bishan, an area well-connected by various bus routes. Currently, airfares from Vietnam to Singapore range from 3 million to 7 million VND, depending on when you book, and you only need a short-term tourist visa to enter Singapore. Summer is an ideal time to enjoy these spicy dishes when the weather is cooler.
Overall, Shi Xiang Ge is a must-visit if you want to taste traditional Chinese cuisine in Singapore. The braised meat noodles here will provide you with an unforgettable culinary experience.
