Discover the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos, a place filled with mysteries and surprises.
Beginning an Extraordinary Adventure
On my birthday, I had the chance to explore the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, one of Laos’s lesser-known and enigmatic regions. This unique area is a crossroads of three countries: Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, each contributing fascinating stories, especially regarding the development of this special economic zone.
Getting to the Golden Triangle
To reach the Golden Triangle, you first need to fly to Chiang Rai Airport (CEI) in Thailand. From there, it's about a 45-minute drive, followed by a 10-minute boat ride on the Mekong River. This journey offers impressive panoramic views of the stunning scenery around you.
As you approach, you’ll catch a glimpse of a bustling city across the river in Laos, featuring tall buildings and a grand hotel. This is the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, a project run by a Chinese entrepreneur.
The Special Economic Zone: History and Present
This zone was developed by Zhao Wei, a well-known investor in the Macau casino industry. In 2007, he signed a 99-year land lease with the Laotian government to establish such an expansive area. The main goal was to boost the local economy by attracting tourism, though there are many questions surrounding this development.
Allegations regarding Zhao Wei’s connections to illegal activities such as human trafficking and money laundering only fueled my curiosity. You can find extensive documentation about these issues in various online videos, which include shocking reports on human trafficking and other dubious activities.
My Experience in the Special Economic Zone
Despite hearing complex stories about this area, I was determined to learn more and asked the management at the Four Seasons Golden Triangle to arrange a tour of the Special Economic Zone. Surprisingly, not many tourists had requested this in the past five years.

We prepared thoroughly, including taking photos for our visa at the border. To enter Laos, you will need a visa on arrival, which is quite easy if you go through the Golden Triangle border.
Exploring the Special Economic Zone
Finally, on a beautiful morning, we ventured into the Special Economic Zone. My first impression was one of desolation, despite it once being a bustling place. The modern infrastructure, paired with the lack of foot traffic, created an eerie atmosphere.
Outside the border gate, there were a few ATMs allowing withdrawals in Chinese, Laotian, and Thai currencies. However, the silence and lifelessness made me question the true extent of development in this area.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
For Vietnamese travelers, getting to Laos is relatively easy. You don’t need a visa if you stay for less than 30 days. Flight tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Chiang Rai typically range from 2 to 4 million VND, depending on when you book.
Once in Laos, you can easily use taxis or motorbike taxis to get to the Golden Triangle area. Be sure to carry some cash, as not all places accept credit cards. The food here is quite appealing to Vietnamese tastes, with a variety of dishes ranging from grilled meats to fresh salads. Dining costs around 100,000 to 300,000 VND for a meal.
Overall, visiting the Special Economic Zone in the Golden Triangle of Laos is a unique experience, but be prepared for some unsettling truths you might encounter here.
In conclusion, if you’ve ever wanted to explore a mysterious land filled with intriguing surprises, the Golden Triangle is definitely a destination you shouldn’t miss.
