Discovering Curaçao: A Must-Visit Caribbean Island

Sometimes, spontaneous decisions lead us to the most unexpected places. Curaçao is a perfect example of this. We stumbled upon this beautiful island and were instantly captivated by its charm. From the picturesque capital of Willemstad to the crystal-clear waters, Curaçao offers unique experiences that are hard to find elsewhere.

Must-Try Experiences

When in Curaçao, don’t miss out on exciting tours like the boat trip to Klein Curaçao with Mermaid Boat Tours or exploring the vibrant city of Willemstad, hailed as one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Additionally, a day tour that showcases various highlights of Curaçao, including beaches, flamingo fields, and distilleries, is definitely worth the experience.

Fantastic Accommodations

Curaçao boasts highly-rated hotels such as the adult-only Pietermaai Oasis, the tranquil Bayside Boutique Hotel close to the beach, and popular all-inclusive resorts like The Rif at Mangrove Beach. You’re sure to find the perfect place to stay that suits your needs.

How to Get to the Caribbean Island?

My partner and I decided to make Curaçao a stop on our journey to Barbados. Thanks to a KLM flight, we were able to enjoy a few days here before boarding our cruise! With the support of the Curaçao Tourism Board, we rented a car to explore the island, took a boat trip to Klein Curaçao, and spent a relaxing day at Mondi City Beach Club.

If you plan to rent a car in Curaçao, be sure to check thoroughly and book early. Exploring Curaçao on your own is a true delight, with easy-to-navigate roads and minimal traffic.

Curaçao: A Country Within the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Curaçao is located near Venezuela and is part of the ABC island group along with Aruba and Bonaire. This nation is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands but boasts its own culture and development. They even have their own flag at the World Cup, a remarkable achievement for such a small country.

Language, Currency, and Phone Plans

The residents of Curaçao speak multiple languages, including English, Dutch, Spanish, and Papiamento. You can easily communicate in English during your stay. Although part of the EU, Curaçao does not use the euro; instead, they use the Caribbean Guilder (XCG). Most places accept US dollars, but it's wise to carry some cash just in case.

Exploring Curaçao Independently

Curaçao is incredibly easy to explore on your own. Driving from Willemstad to the western beaches takes only about 50 minutes. The roads are fairly stable, with few hazardous sections, making it a straightforward drive. This makes Curaçao one of the best driving destinations in the Caribbean.

Breathtaking Blue Waters

If you love stunning turquoise waters, Curaçao will not disappoint. The sea at Playa Lagun, Klein Curaçao, and Blue Bay showcases a unique shade of blue that is rare to find.

Willemstad: The Most Beautiful City in the Caribbean

Willemstad features unique architecture, vibrant colored walls, and an array of interesting restaurants. For me, it ranks as one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean, second only to San Juan in Puerto Rico.
