Exploring the New CRJ450 from United Airlines: A Fresh Take on a Beloved Aircraft
During the unveiling event by United Airlines in Los Angeles, I had the chance to step aboard the brand new Bombardier CRJ450 and delve into its intricate details. While this isn’t a completely new aircraft, it has undergone significant upgrades, enhancing the regional flying experience for one of United Express's most cherished planes.
Innovative Design
The CRJ450 is essentially an upgraded version of the CRJ200, redesigned to include a first-class cabin, Economy Plus (offering more legroom), and standard economy seating. With the addition of the first-class section and Economy Plus seats, this aircraft accommodates only 41 passengers instead of the previous 50. United claims this aircraft aims to deliver a more premium experience for shorter routes, featuring fewer seats, more spacious areas, and a distinctly different feel compared to traditional regional jets.
First-Class Cabin
The first-class section of the CRJ450 features 7 seats arranged in a 1-2 configuration. As you might expect on a regional jet, these are reclining seats, although they feel a bit cozier compared to the CRJ550. While there are no overhead bins, this area feels more open, providing a natural separation between cabins without the need for curtains. For carry-on luggage, there is a forward compartment capable of holding seven large bags.

Economy Plus and Economy Class
Behind the first-class cabin, there’s a neat economy section with 16 Economy Plus seats that offer extra legroom. Unlike the first-class area, the economy section comes with larger overhead bins compared to the CRJ200. United asserts that these bins can accommodate larger bags, though some luggage may still need to be checked at the gate. At the rear of the economy section, there is still a small restroom, just like before.
Premium Airline Strategy
The CRJ450 is part of a broader trend at United towards more premium configurations, even on shorter routes and smaller aircraft. By reducing the number of seats and increasing the ratio of premium seats, United believes that passengers will be willing to pay more for a better experience, even on regional flights. I think this is a sound assessment, although I don’t expect this aircraft to be used on longer routes (however, its range is sufficient for flights of about three hours).
Conclusion
The CRJ450 represents the latest chapter in United’s strategy to provide a more premium product across its fleet. United is clearly striving to enhance the regional flying experience by reducing seat density and focusing on premium seating. While passengers will undoubtedly appreciate the first-class and Economy Plus offerings, I believe the majority of travelers (regardless of where they sit) will surely value the high-speed Starlink internet on board, making those short flights feel quick and enjoyable.
