Unveiling United Airlines' New Boeing 787-9
During a media event hosted by United Airlines in Los Angeles, I had the incredible opportunity to board their brand-new Boeing 787-9, featuring the innovative "Elevated" design. I explored every corner of this aircraft and captured photos from every angle. Now, I’m excited to take you on a comprehensive tour of United's most luxurious plane yet.
United Airlines' 787-9 "Elevated" Cabin
Before taking a test flight, I couldn't quite gauge its full potential, but it was evident that United's new Dreamliners represent a significant upgrade over the previous generation. The design is stunning, and the seating features in each cabin class enhance the overall passenger experience. The new 787-9 accommodates just 222 passengers, including 64 Polaris business class seats, 35 Premium Plus seats, and 123 economy seats. Notably, there are 99 premium seats, the highest ratio among U.S. airlines.
Polaris Studio: “Business Class Plus”
The standout feature of this 787 compared to older models is the Polaris Studio, a new addition to the business class cabin that offers a more spacious environment and enhanced service. Eight seats are arranged in the front of each Polaris cabin. These seats are about 25% larger than standard business class seats and come with an additional ottoman for a companion. Each seat is equipped with a 27-inch 4K OLED screen—the largest currently offered by U.S. airlines—along with wireless charging capabilities and Bluetooth connectivity.
Seat Size and Design
The 9D/F seats can convert into a double bed, allowing for an added mattress layer to provide extra comfort for traveling companions. United has announced a starting price of $499 for these seats, regardless of the route. Polaris Studio passengers will enjoy exclusive check-in, a more diverse menu selection, caviar and Champagne, a snack box, and an extensive personal amenities kit.

Polaris: Adding a Touch of Privacy
Adjacent to Polaris Studio is the updated Polaris cabin, which maintains a 1-2-1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access from every seat. The most significant change is the addition of sliding doors, which United previously resisted but has now officially integrated. The screens are also about 19 inches larger, and the seat design offers a more secluded and private experience. Each seat will feature wireless charging and adjustable ambient lighting, with suede fabric upholstery and marble tabletops sourced from Brazil.
Premium Plus: Notable Improvements
The Premium Plus cabin hasn’t changed much, but the seat upholstery has received a fresh design. The layout consists of a 2-3-2 configuration with 35 seats, featuring a 38-inch seat pitch, wider seats, and enhanced privacy thanks to new dividers. Wireless charging and larger seatback screens are also included in this package.
Economy Class: Bigger Screens and Bluetooth Connectivity
The economy cabin is arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration with 123 seats, including 39 Economy Plus seats that offer extra legroom. Each seat comes equipped with a 4K OLED screen featuring Bluetooth connectivity, representing a significant upgrade, although United also plans to enhance the complimentary in-flight headphones.
Cockpit and Galley
I also had the chance to tour the cockpit, where a friendly pilot happily posed for a photo with me. It was clear that the forward galley has been equipped with new barriers to ensure that crew members don’t have to navigate around when pilots need to use the restroom. The rear galley is also spacious and includes a side table to facilitate meal preparation for the crew.
Focusing on the Premium Class Strategy
United is clearly betting on its premium seating. With 99 premium seats on board, this aircraft is designed to maximize revenue from passengers willing to pay extra for space and comfort. From what I've observed, this strategy appears to be working well, but the real challenges lie ahead.
Let’s hope we don't face a situation where oil prices double like last year, but I can sense a shift in demand, especially from conversations I’ve had with customers.
Conclusion
The new 787-9 from United is the airline's most ambitious aircraft to date, clearly emphasizing premium cabins, segmentation, and in-flight technology. The Polaris Studio seats represent an exciting blend of first and business class, but the real highlight is the spaciousness of the premium cabins. This is a trend the airline industry is moving towards, and United is making a strong adjustment compared to its U.S. competitors, at least for now.
