Embarking on an Adventure with the Merseyside Queer Hikers

I wouldn’t consider myself an avid hiker. I absolutely adore long walks in nature surrounded by stunning scenery, but the thought of climbing mountains, navigating rocks and tree roots, or deciphering complex hiking maps can be daunting. However, everything changed when I moved from New York to Liverpool two years ago. Recently, I began exploring the idea of joining an LGBTQ+ hiking group, and it genuinely excited me.

Merseyside Queer Hikers: A Welcoming Hiking Community

As I engaged with online communities about Liverpool, I often saw newcomers asking about LGBTQ+ friendly landscapes in the area. One name that frequently popped up was Merseyside Queer Hikers—a group known for its friendliness and welcoming nature. This was particularly enticing, given Merseyside’s reputation for its natural beauty, featuring lush forests and breathtaking coastlines.

My First Experience

At the end of April this year, I decided to book a hike with this group. I had read a lot about them and couldn’t wait to meet new friends. On that day, we gathered near the River Mersey, on a beautiful peninsula. The weather was splendid, which was one reason why the group attracted around 40 participants.

The Spirit of Equality

In the cheerful atmosphere, I realized I had found my place in a community where we could express ourselves freely without the fear of judgment. Colorful backpacks adorned with unique accessories and witty remarks created a vibrant ambiance. One of my hiking companions, Heather Cooke, the founder of the Merseyside Queer Hikers, shared that the group was formed to provide opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect and forge friendships.

Opportunities and Challenges in Hiking

Cooke also pointed out that while hiking in nature is exhilarating, not everyone feels comfortable doing it alone or in small groups. The group fosters a safe space where everyone can share their names without any distinction. This is what makes the group so beloved. Many find solace in not having to face discrimination or stigma while participating in outdoor activities.

Unforgettable Memories

I brought my poodle, Gus, along for extra comfort. However, I didn’t need to worry too much about being alone. To my surprise, I ran into friends from the roller derby team I had joined the previous month. We quickly became friends and explored the outdoors together.

Appreciating Natural Beauty

Strolling along the coastline, I had the chance to gaze far into Wales. The relaxed atmosphere allowed us to easily strike up engaging conversations. Compared to attending an event at a bar where everyone is packed closely together, hiking offered a much less pressured socializing experience.
