Bergamo, an ancient city at the foot of the Alps, is gradually emerging from Milan's shadow, establishing itself as one of Northern Italy's must-visit destinations. With its rich history and vibrant cobblestone streets, Bergamo offers a serene atmosphere that avoids the crowds, especially at this time of year. Just an hour's drive from Milan Bergamo Airport, it's easy to reach, and if you have a car, you can also explore Lake Como, Lake Iseo, and Lake Garda within about an hour.
A Rich History and Architectural Wonders
Bergamo was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 49 BC and later became a stronghold of Venice. Today, the city is distinctly divided into two parts: Città Alta (Upper Town), a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by 18th-century Venetian defensive walls, and Città Bassa (Lower Town), which is more modern and lively. Together, these areas create a vibrant city where contemporary Italian life unfolds against a backdrop of centuries-old history.
Exploring Città Alta
I spent a few hours wandering through Città Alta, strolling along the cobblestone streets and admiring the sunlight reflecting off the terracotta rooftops. One of my favorite stops was the Rocca di Bergamo, an ancient fortress with impressive 16th-century walls, offering panoramic views of the Alps and the sprawling Lombardy plains below.
The Religious Heart of the City
At Piazza Duomo, the religious heart of the city, I encountered stunning architectural masterpieces like the Duomo di Bergamo and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Notably, the Basilica lacks a main facade, with visitors entering through two side doors. The Basilica's intricate interior left me in awe, making it hard to decide where to look first.

Art Exploration
As an art lover, I couldn't miss visiting the Accademia Carrara, one of the renowned art museums housing works by great artists such as Pisanello, Titian, and Canaletto. Additionally, the museum features a fascinating 15th-century Tarot deck, the rules of which remain a mystery to this day.
Distinctive Cuisine
Bergamo is also rich in unique culinary offerings, from polenta with slow-cooked meat to seasonal risottos. You must try the local specialty, casoncelli alla bergamasca, which I learned to make during a cooking class at Nonna Aldo. There’s something incredibly satisfying about preparing a dish yourself and enjoying it alongside professional creations with butter, crispy pancetta, and Grana Padano cheese.
Must-Visit Dining Spots
I dined at Ristorante Ol Giopi and La Margi, a charming restaurant with a brick archway where the staff wears traditional attire. My meal featured not only cured meats but also casoncelli and risotto with Taleggio Dop cheese and black truffles. To top it off, I indulged in Stracciatella ice cream, a famous dessert that originated right in Bergamo.
