Jiuzhaigou: The Most Beautiful Natural Wonder in China
If you’re planning a trip to Sichuan, China, make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to explore Jiuzhaigou, one of the country’s most stunning nature reserves. Renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks, this area is truly a masterpiece of nature. However, its breathtaking beauty attracts a throng of visitors daily. Entering this paradise isn’t a straightforward task without proper planning, as tickets can sell out in the blink of an eye.
How to Get from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou
One of the quickest ways to reach Jiuzhaigou is by taking a high-speed train from Chengdu. You can catch a train from Chengdu East Station to Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou Station, which takes about two hours. Keep in mind that train tickets and park entrance tickets should be booked at least three days in advance to avoid the disappointment of sold-out tickets.
Upon arriving at Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou Station, exit through the main gate and head to the parking lot on your right. Here, numerous bus drivers will ask where you’re headed. Just tell them you want to go to Jiuzhaigou, and they will guide you to the right bus. The fare is 51 CNY, and the bus will take you straight to the park entrance.
If you plan to visit both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in the same trip, it’s wise to allocate at least one night in Jiuzhaigou. You can catch the earliest train from Chengdu at 6:15 AM, arriving in Jiuzhaigou by 10:15 AM, giving you a full day to explore. Remember, booking your train tickets in advance is crucial to avoid long lines and wasted time.

Traveling by Bus
Before the advent of high-speed trains, a bus ride lasting 8 to 10 hours was the only option for budget travelers with plenty of time. Buses depart from the Nanmen Bus Station or the Chadianzi Bus Station, but make sure the bus will take you directly to Jiuzhaigou Valley, not just to the distant Jiuzhaigou County.
Buses from Huanglong
If you’re starting your journey from Huanglong and wish to reach Jiuzhaigou, booking a shuttle service is the most convenient option. The cost is around $11 per trip, with multiple departure times from 7 AM to 1 PM. When you book your ticket, the travel company will send you pickup details and the bus license plate via WeChat, so keep an eye on your messages.
Things to Know Before Visiting Jiuzhaigou
Train and park tickets often sell out quickly, so be sure to book at least three days in advance. The earliest train from Chengdu at 6:15 AM is your best bet if you want ample time for sightseeing.
Overnight stays within the Jiuzhaigou park area are not permitted; hotels are usually located near the entrance. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, and don’t forget to carry valid identification when entering the park.
My experience traveling from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou was quite smooth, although there was a bit of stress due to not being able to secure train tickets as early as I had hoped. The crowds at the station can be quite overwhelming, so careful planning will help you avoid any unpleasant situations.
