Discover all you need to know about New Zealand's working holiday visa, including application requirements, procedures, and essential tips for Vietnamese travelers.
Introduction to New Zealand's Working Holiday Visa
New Zealand has always been an enticing destination for those looking to experience a new way of life, especially through the working holiday visa. Since my arrival in Auckland on this visa, I've had incredible and invaluable experiences. This visa not only opens the door to job opportunities but also allows you to explore the stunning beauty of Aotearoa—New Zealand's name in the Māori language.
Eligibility Requirements
New Zealand offers the working holiday visa to citizens of 42 countries, allowing a maximum stay of 12 months. Applicants aged between 18 and 30 (or 35 for some countries like Canada) are eligible to apply. Notably, citizens from Canada and the UK can apply for a visa valid for up to 23 months. For more detailed information, you can refer to the official website of New Zealand's immigration authority.
Visa Application Procedure
To apply for the visa, you'll need to prepare several essential documents, including a health certificate, a police clearance, and proof of financial means. Specifically, you must have at least 4,200 NZD (approximately 2,473 USD) in your bank account and valid health insurance for the duration of your stay. If you're applying for the visa from within New Zealand, a chest X-ray is mandatory.
Preparation Steps Upon Arrival in New Zealand
Once you arrive in New Zealand, obtaining an IRD tax number is crucial for working and opening a bank account. Your salary will be paid through a New Zealand bank account, making this step essential. For opening an account, ANZ and BNZ are recommended banks for those on temporary visas.
Transportation and Shopping in New Zealand
Public transportation in New Zealand is somewhat limited, making it essential to own a vehicle to explore remote areas. You can purchase a used car or campervan from other working holiday travelers in Auckland or through online platforms like Facebook Marketplace.

The vehicle registration system is straightforward, but remember that all vehicles must have a valid technical certificate. If you don't purchase a self-contained vehicle, you can camp in designated areas at reasonable rates.
Job Opportunities in New Zealand
The working holiday visa allows you to seek temporary work, but contracts cannot exceed six months. Jobs in agriculture and tourism are particularly popular and easy to find. The current minimum wage is about 23.95 NZD per hour (approximately 13.90 USD), with taxes deducted directly from your salary by your employer.
Many working holiday visa holders enjoy agricultural jobs like apple or potato harvesting. You can also find job listings on the Backpacker Board website, where many employers post vacancies for working holiday travelers.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
Vietnamese citizens wishing to visit New Zealand must apply for a visa before their trip. The visa processing time can take between 15 to 20 days. It's also essential to prepare financial proof and health insurance, as these will facilitate your visa application.
In terms of costs, you can expect to spend around 15 million VND for the entire visa application process and travel preparations. Flight prices from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Auckland range from 15 to 20 million VND, depending on the season.
Finally, it's best to visit during spring (September to November) or summer (December to February) to enjoy pleasant weather and exciting outdoor activities.
