Hellen Nkuraiya is changing the lives of Maasai women in Kenya through education and courage. Let's explore her inspiring journey.
Hellen Nkuraiya: A Woman Shaping Her Community's Future
Nestled on the edge of Maasai Mara, where red dust swirls around the fields and Maasai warriors patrol the land, Hellen Nkuraiya is redefining the future for her community. She has bravely stood against deeply rooted cultural traditions, such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriages, while creating pathways to education and economic opportunities for Maasai girls and women of all ages.
Leeanne, an Australian traveler, first encountered Hellen during her Intrepid journey in 2023, which included a stop at Tepesua, the community organization founded by Hellen in 2015. "We knew we were going to Maasai Mara, but we had no idea what we would actually see," Leeanne shared.
A Warm Welcome at Tepesua
Upon arriving at Tepesua, located nearly 200 km from Nairobi, Leeanne and her boyfriend Gary were greeted by Maasai warriors in vibrant attire. Following a brief welcome ceremony that combined dance and storytelling, Hellen and the warriors offered them a glimpse into the traditions and daily lives of the Maasai people.
Tepesua is not just a tourist destination; it is a beacon of hope and belief for young girls in the area. Hellen, a survivor of FGM herself, escaped a forced marriage at just 11 years old and has dedicated her life to protecting other young girls from a similar fate.
Education as the Key to Change
Currently, Tepesua serves as a safe haven for over 100 girls seeking refuge from FGM and forced marriages. This community includes two schools, an eco-camp for visitors, and a village for widows and families. The community's initiatives not only promote education but also empower women.
Since 2018, Intrepid has been bringing travelers to Tepesua, providing them with a firsthand look at Hellen's efforts to improve living conditions for women in a traditionally patriarchal culture. These visits create a sustainable source of tourism revenue while supporting the entire community.

Other Community Programs
Alongside reducing the FGM rate from 38% to approximately 15% by 2022, Tepesua has implemented various programs aimed at enhancing food security and creating sustainable livelihoods for widows and families. One notable initiative is a livestock ownership training program, which helps families engage in the economy and improve their living standards.
Travel Tips for Vietnamese Tourists
For Vietnamese travelers planning to visit Tepesua, it’s important to note the visa requirements. Vietnamese citizens need a visa to enter Kenya, which can be obtained from the Kenyan Embassy or online. The visa fee ranges from approximately $50 to $100 (equivalent to about 1,200,000 - 2,400,000 VND).
Flights from Vietnam to Nairobi typically take between 12 to 17 hours, depending on layovers, with round-trip ticket prices ranging from 8 to 15 million VND.
Travelers should also familiarize themselves with the travel seasons in Kenya. The dry season from June to October is the ideal time to visit Maasai Mara, coinciding with the vibrant wildlife migration.
A Special Volunteer Journey
Leeanne and Gary returned to Tepesua as volunteers a year later. They participated in repainting classrooms and felt that Hellen's work was incredibly impactful. "They welcomed us with dance and music, and I realized that I was no longer a guest but a part of the tribe," Leeanne shared.
Hellen Nkuraiya: A Hero Without a Cape
In 2025, Hellen was recognized as a national hero in Kenya for her efforts to uplift and empower marginalized communities. Her influence is felt not only by the travelers who witness her work but also by the women she protects. Hellen's journey to bring change to the Maasai community continues, one girl at a time.
