A passenger on a United Airlines flight made headlines by repeatedly banging his seat for two hours due to the inconvenience caused by a tall passenger behind him. This incident highlights the importance of maintaining civility while flying.
Strange Behavior on a Flight
On a recent United Airlines flight, a passenger drew attention by incessantly banging against his own seat for nearly two hours. The reason? A 6'6" (1.98m) tall passenger sitting behind him made it impossible for him to recline his seat. This kind of behavior is certainly not what we expect from adults on an airplane.
Video Captures the Incident
A fellow passenger nearby shared a video of the incident, showing the man repeatedly hitting his seat every few minutes throughout the flight. The occurrence took place on flight UA1377 early in the morning, traveling from Denver (DEN) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
The man sitting behind, constrained by his height, had his knees pressed against the back of the seat, clearly preventing the passenger in front from reclining. While it's understandable to feel discomfort, such actions are unjustifiable.
Advice for Passengers
The individual who recorded the clip noted that the tall passenger seemed unfazed by the situation, while the flight attendants were aware of what was happening. However, it was noteworthy that there was no communication from the frustrated man. If your seat cannot recline due to the height of the person behind you, it's best to ask the flight attendants for assistance.
Politely explain the issue and inquire if there are any alternative seats available or if the passenger behind can shift a little. Alternatively, you might have to accept that during a short flight from Denver to Chicago, reclining your seat may not be an option.

Reclining Rights and Courtesy
While I support passengers' rights to recline their seats if they are designed to do so, that right comes with a bit of common sense. If the passenger behind you cannot help but have their knees bump into your seat, perhaps the issue isn't that they are "taking away" your reclining space.
The real problem may lie in airlines cramming too many seats into the cabin, leading to discomfort for everyone involved. Passengers should behave like adults and ask for help when needed.
Possible Solutions
There may not be a perfect solution in this case. On busy routes, the flight may be fully booked, and no one wants to change seats. However, banging on the seat only makes the man look foolish.
I was genuinely disappointed that the flight attendants did not intervene to ask him to stop or possibly detain him upon landing for disruptive behavior.
Conclusion and Takeaway
A United Airlines passenger spent two hours banging on his seat because a tall passenger behind him may have prevented him from reclining. While discomfort is understandable, continually banging on the seat is childish, disruptive, and potentially harmful.
If your seat cannot recline, seek assistance. If no help is available, be patient like the other passengers. The tall passenger behind was completely unaffected. Sometimes, the best response to unreasonable behavior is to remain calm and composed.
