The Ideal Spot for Char Kuey Teow Lovers in Malaysia

If you’ve read my previous posts, you know how much I adore Char Kuey Teow. With its signature smoky flavor from the hot wok, it’s hard to resist a delicious plate of this dish. When a reader suggested I try it at Chuan Kee Restaurant in USJ 4, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. This cozy little café is tucked away near a residential area, right next to a nasi kandar shop. As soon as I stepped inside, I was pleasantly surprised by its compactness, quite different from the bustling food courts commonly found in Malaysia.

Food at Chuan Kee Restaurant

Inside Chuan Kee, I noticed various stalls offering everything from mixed rice to chicken rice and wantan noodles. The chicken rice stall, in particular, drew a large crowd, with customers lining up to grab takeout boxes. Seeing the long queue piqued my curiosity about how good this dish could be.

Since I was dining alone, I opted for a small portion of Char Kuey Teow for 8 RM and a Teh Ais for 3.5 RM. The food arrived quickly, within just five minutes. My plate of Char Kuey Teow included flat rice noodles, shrimp, bean sprouts, Chinese sausage, and spring onions.

Exploring the Flavors of Char Kuey Teow

As I lifted my chopsticks to take a bite, I expected an explosion of flavors based on the recommendations. However, I must admit I was a bit disappointed. While the smoky flavor of the noodles was present, it didn’t quite blow me away. Nevertheless, I finished the dish because it wasn’t bad at all.

I particularly enjoyed the shrimp in the Char Kuey Teow, but this time there were only three pieces instead of the four to five I had hoped for. On the bright side, the shrimp was already peeled, making it convenient to eat. They were sweet and tender, and the quality was decent. Although I had asked the chef to leave out the Chinese sausage, I still found some in my plate. Unfortunately, I can’t eat it due to its pork content, so I had to set it aside.

The dish also came with a generous amount of bean sprouts, which I love, so I happily devoured them. They added a nice crunch and balanced the overall texture of the dish, especially since the noodles and other ingredients were soft and chewy.

A General Overview of Chuan Kee Restaurant

After sipping on a few more gulps of Teh Ais, a popular milk tea, I noticed the flavor had slightly diluted due to the melting ice. Still, it was refreshing enough to complement my meal.

As I wrapped up my meal, I felt satisfied but not particularly impressed. Both the Char Kuey Teow and Teh Ais were decent but not the standout flavors I was searching for. The chicken rice from the stall next door looked more enticing, so I plan to return to give it a try. If you find yourself in the USJ 4 area and need a quick meal, Chuan Kee Restaurant is a solid choice.
