Delta Air Lines has selected Amazon Leo for its in-flight Wi-Fi service, a choice defended by CEO Ed Bastian. This article explores the reasons behind the decision and the associated risks.

The Showdown Between Delta and Starlink

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian is standing firm on the airline's decision to opt for Amazon Leo over Starlink for its in-flight Wi-Fi service. Bastian argues that Amazon provides greater benefits beyond just satellite connectivity, and offers more attractive pricing. This rationale helps Delta explain its choice, even as questions linger about Starlink.

Understanding Delta's Strategic Choice

The airline surprised many by selecting Amazon Leo, Amazon's low-earth orbit satellite network, instead of Starlink, which has already proven itself in the commercial aviation sector. Other airlines like United, Alaska, and Emirates have swiftly transitioned to Starlink or announced plans to do so.

In fact, United is rapidly deploying Starlink and expects to complete installations before Delta begins rolling out Amazon Leo in 2028. This decision by Delta seems to carry a high level of risk.

Amazon: A More Comprehensive Partner Than Starlink

Bastian emphasized that Amazon offers more than just satellite connectivity: "Amazon brings more than satellite technology. They have excellent retail capabilities, Amazon Prime services, and gaming technology, which Starlink lacks." This indicates that Delta is aiming for a deeper in-flight entertainment relationship with Amazon.

On the pricing front, Bastian noted: "The opportunity for improved bandwidth at a lower cost than what we've seen from Starlink will make a significant difference."

Challenges With Wi-Fi Service Quality

However, Elon Musk has publicly criticized this decision, suggesting that Delta is making the Wi-Fi experience more cumbersome and expensive for passengers. Musk argues that SpaceX's requirements for Starlink ensure there are no annoying "gateways," meaning Starlink's Wi-Fi should operate as smoothly as it does at home.

It's Not Just About Wi-Fi Speed

While it's true that Delta has excelled in providing free Wi-Fi, the airline's goal isn't to complicate Internet access for passengers. The crux of the matter is that Delta wants to control the digital environment on its flights, not just provide Internet access. They want passengers to log into Delta Sync, interact with SkyMiles, and consume content that Delta can leverage for profit.

Risks and Implementation Timeline

Although Starlink is currently a proven in-flight internet product, Amazon Leo is still in development and not yet as refined as Starlink. Delta won't begin implementing Amazon Leo until 2028. Meanwhile, United is swiftly rolling out Starlink and may equip its entire fleet with next-generation connectivity before Delta even begins. Even Delta's current transoceanic flights lack reliable Wi-Fi.

Future Strategy and Considerations

Bastian insists that the choice of Amazon is a careful decision with a broader digital partner, not just focused on providing Wi-Fi. Amazon offers retail capabilities, Prime services, entertainment, advertising, and potentially lower pricing. For an airline like Delta, modernizing and leveraging customer data is crucial. However, the risks remain evident. Starlink works well right now, while Amazon Leo must prove its value in the commercial aviation arena.

Ultimately, if United rapidly provides free Starlink service across its fleet while Delta waits for Amazon Leo, passengers may become more frustrated than Delta anticipates.
