Dive into the epic rivalry between Heng Ji Chicken Rice and Whampoa Nan Xiang Chicken Rice. Which eatery will claim the title of Singapore's chicken rice king?
Introduction to Singapore Chicken Rice
Chicken rice is a beloved national dish in Singapore, celebrated for its tender chicken, fragrant rice, and distinctive sauces. In this article, we’ll compare two renowned chicken rice establishments: the iconic Heng Ji Chicken Rice, which has been serving customers for 62 years, and the newer Whampoa Nan Xiang Chicken Rice, which has made a splash in Woodleigh Village Hawker Centre just two years ago. This promises to be an exciting clash of culinary generations!
Heng Ji Chicken Rice
Located in the Chinatown Complex, Heng Ji Chicken Rice is one of Singapore's oldest chicken rice spots. Now run by the second generation, the restaurant has undergone several changes over the years. Following the passing of the original owner, the management has transitioned to two cousins from Malaysia. They specialize in steamed chicken only, forgoing roasted chicken, which is a plus for those who appreciate the natural flavor of chicken.
The prices are quite reasonable, with a small plate of chicken rice costing around 3.80 SGD (approximately 65,000 VND) and a large serving at 4.80 SGD (around 80,000 VND). I tried both the breast and thigh chicken rice. The breast portion was served with thick slices of chicken and accompanied by cucumber slices. The chicken was incredibly tender and not at all chewy—a gold standard for chicken rice.
Whampoa Nan Xiang Chicken Rice
Founded by 28-year-old Shaun in 2024, Whampoa Nan Xiang Chicken Rice started as a small stall and quickly gained popularity, expanding to as many as 10 branches. Shaun’s inspiring entrepreneurial story began after a customer criticized his mother, prompting him to step in and take charge of the business. He revamped the cooking methods and established clear processes to ensure the quality of the dishes.
The prices for steamed chicken rice here are similar, around 4.50 SGD (approximately 75,000 VND) for both breast and thigh portions. The chicken is prepared with high skill, resulting in a smooth texture, and the crispy skin adds an enticing element to the dish. Notably, the accompanying sauce is slightly sweet but does not overshadow the main flavors of the meal.

Taste Comparison
Heng Ji Chicken Rice offers delicious flavors but could benefit from a bit more chicken essence. The rice is also tasty, though the grains are a bit fragile. In contrast, Whampoa Nan Xiang features fragrant and sticky rice, perfectly complementing the rich flavors of the chicken fat, creating a delightful experience for diners.
The chili sauce at Heng Ji has a mild heat, whereas Whampoa Nan Xiang's version is more robust and spicier, perfect for those who crave a kick. If you’re a Vietnamese resident in Singapore, trying both eateries will deepen your understanding of the unique chicken rice preparation here.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
When visiting Singapore, you won’t need a visa for stays under 30 days. There are usually multiple daily flights from Vietnam to Singapore from major airports like Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN), with ticket prices ranging from 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 VND depending on the season.
Singapore is a vibrant city brimming with diverse street food options. If you have the chance, be sure to stop by both chicken rice spots to compare and experience the differences between these two culinary generations.
