Explore the American Express Business Gold Card with its $375 annual fee and discover if it's truly worth the investment. This analysis is based on personal experience and spending categories.
Overview of the American Express Business Gold Card
The American Express® Business Gold Card, with an annual fee of $375, raises the question of whether it's a worthy investment. Instead of merely focusing on offers or discounts, it's crucial to evaluate if your top spending categories align with the areas where Amex rewards you with 4x points.
Detailed Analysis from Personal Experience
I started using this card again last year, attracted by an enticing welcome offer and without being tied to a "one-time-only" clause. Over the past eight months, I’ve tracked my spending categories to assess the actual value of this card. I’ve paid the $375 fee but have received about $160 in monthly credits, thanks to the $20 credit each month.
Attractive Welcome Offers
The American Express Business Gold card frequently features appealing welcome offers, currently up to 200,000 Membership Rewards points if you spend $15,000 in the first three months. With each point valued at approximately 1.7 cents, the total value could reach $3,400. For those who can meet this spending requirement, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
4x Points Spending Categories
This card allows you to earn 4x points on your two highest spending categories from a list of six eligible categories, which include:
- Purchases from media providers in the U.S. for advertising (online, TV, radio).
- Purchases from electronics stores and software providers in the U.S.
- Dining expenses, including takeout and delivery.
- Gas station purchases.
- Public transport expenses, such as trains, taxis, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways.
- Monthly wireless phone service charges from U.S. providers.
However, to truly benefit from the 4x points, your business needs to have significant expenditures in these categories.

Challenges with Spending Categories
While these spending categories may seem appealing, the reality is that not everyone can take full advantage of them. Personally, I don’t spend much on advertising or electronics, which means I primarily earn 4x points from dining or gas station purchases—neither of which constitutes high spending. This raises concerns about the long-term effectiveness of this card for me.
$150,000 Spending Limit
The American Express Business Gold card has a $150,000 limit for earning 4x points in a calendar year. This means that if you exceed this limit, you’ll only earn 1x points on subsequent expenditures. While this may be theoretical for many small businesses, it could be a significant consideration for larger businesses or those with high spending volumes.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
To obtain an American Express card, you need a bank account in the U.S. and to meet certain requirements. While Amex cards are not as popular in Vietnam as some other types, if you frequently travel for business or engage in international transactions, having this card could offer numerous benefits. The rewards and offers from Amex are particularly attractive for cardholders.
Conclusion: Should You Invest?
In summary, while the American Express Business Gold card offers many appealing perks, it may not be the best choice for everyone. It’s essential to carefully consider your spending categories and your business needs before deciding whether to use this card.
