Our family's first flight together was filled with challenges, from delays to cancellations. These experiences will help you better prepare for traveling with young children.
An Unforgettable Journey
I once thought of myself as a seasoned traveler, but my recent flight from Miami to New York opened my eyes to the unique challenges of family travel. After a week in Europe with my family, including our two sons, this trip marked the first time I was traveling with our youngest, Jet, who is nearly one year old. While I had traveled extensively with my older son Miles, navigating the airport with a toddler like Jet proved to be more complicated than I had anticipated.
Careful Preparation
In light of this, I meticulously planned our itinerary. I booked tickets for the whole family to fly from Vienna to Skiathos, allowing for a night in Vienna to account for any unforeseen circumstances. I secured first-class tickets for our flight from Miami to New York, with a 4.5-hour layover, followed by connections to Paris and Vienna. All of this was booked using reward points, with the hope of optimizing our overall travel experience.
Reality vs. Expectations
On the day of travel, everything seemed to be going smoothly until trouble struck. The flight from Miami to New York was initially on time, but just minutes after arriving at the Admirals Club, I was informed that it was delayed by 30 minutes. At first, I wasn't too worried. However, the delays kept coming, and soon after, the flight was completely canceled.
Confronting the Chaos
What worried me most wasn't just the need to find an alternative route to Vienna but the fact that five pieces of luggage had already been checked onto the canceled flight. I knew American Airlines didn't have the best reputation for handling baggage. I had faced similar challenges when traveling with my older son before. Was our family cursed when it came to traveling with young children?
Exceptional Airline Staff
Fortunately, the cancellation announcement coincided with my proximity to the customer service desk in the Admirals Club. Staff member Karol quickly stepped in to help me rebook our family's flight. She was incredibly attentive and caring, which gave me some peace of mind. Despite having to downgrade our seats and sit scattered on the plane, the important thing was that we made it onto the next flight to New York.

Navigating the Hurdles
I explained our baggage situation to Karol, and she assured me that our luggage would be automatically forwarded to the next flight. She kept track of our baggage status and encouraged me to check in regularly. In the end, all our luggage was accurately updated.
Helpful Tips for Vietnamese Travelers
If you're planning to travel with your family, especially with young kids, keep in mind that thorough preparation is crucial. Make sure you allow ample time between flights to account for any unexpected situations. Additionally, when flying to Europe, consider the Schengen visa requirements for children, which costs around 2 million VND per child. Flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to New York can range from 15 to 20 million VND per person, depending on the time of booking and the airline.
Moreover, consider booking domestic flights in advance as part of the same itinerary to avoid unfortunate situations like ours. Packing essential items in your carry-on is also vital to ensure your child has everything they need in case of lost luggage.
With thorough preparation, you can minimize stress and enjoy your trip to the fullest.
