Conquering the Heavenly Gate at Tianmen Mountain
If you've found yourself enchanted by the breathtaking scenery of Zhangjiajie, make sure to stop by Tianmen Mountain. This mystical place is famously known as the Heavenly Gate. Just hearing about it makes you want to grab your backpack and go, right? From winding trails and glass walkways perched on cliff edges to the breathtaking cable car rides, this destination promises an unforgettable day of adventure.
Must-See Attractions
As you embark on your journey, I recommend making a stop at the Mid-Station. Here, you'll be treated to views of fluffy clouds embracing the mountains. Just remember to arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy a clear view. I visited in early November, and although the city was shrouded in mist, the cable car took me above the clouds, revealing a truly mesmerizing sight.
Don't forget to check out the 99 Bends Road. Yes, it's famous for its 99 hairpin turns, winding along the mountainside like a giant dragon. Once a challenge for skilled drivers, now you can leisurely take in the views from above.

Conquering the Heavenly Gate
You can't talk about Tianmen Mountain without mentioning the Heavenly Gate. This natural stone arch is a bucket-list destination for many. To reach it, you'll need to climb 999 stairs—sounds exhausting, right? But take your time, rest when needed, and when you finally reach the top, it feels like you're touching the sky.
If climbing isn't your thing, don't worry! There's an escalator available for just 32 CNY (~5 USD) per ride. Still, the experience of ascending those steps is worth it.
Exploring from Above
After conquering the Heavenly Gate, you can continue your journey to the Upper Station. This gateway opens up a myriad of hiking trails, complete with everything from eateries and snacks to breathtaking viewpoints.
You can choose between two paths, and I recommend the red trail. It takes you along the Glass Walkway and many other stunning scenic spots. Be sure to visit the Tianmen Temple, enjoy the views from the summit of Yunmeng, or simply stand and let the breeze carry your thoughts while riding the suspended cable cars.
Additional Tips for Visiting China
When is the best time to go? You can visit Tianmen Mountain year-round, but pay attention to the weather conditions to prepare your clothing and gear accordingly.
How to get there? From Zhangjiajie City, you can take a bus or the cable car up the mountain. Entrance tickets are also crucial, so remember to check the opening hours to avoid arriving only to find the gates closed.
Want to avoid the crowds? Aim to go early on weekdays, with the early morning being the ideal time.
