Discovering the Dive Bar Scene in New York

When it comes to the perfect cocktail or martini, everyone has their preferences. But sometimes, it's the simple pleasures that truly captivate us. Join me as we explore the fantastic dive bars of New York — places where your shoes might stick to the floor, the restroom mirrors are obscured by a collage of stickers and scribbled phone numbers, and the drink specials are anything but ordinary.

The food menu usually features standard bags of chips, or if you're lucky, a microwaved snack. Yet, the charm of each dive bar lies in their unique character, easily recognizable at first glance. Each spot has its own regulars and quirks, creating a vibrant atmosphere you won't find anywhere else.

I’m not talking about the upscale or trendy bars in NYC; these are the spots I gravitate towards when I’m off work and looking for some affordable relaxation. If you find yourself wandering around New York and craving a cold beer, be sure to check out one of the dive bars listed below!

Barrow’s Pub

Address: 463 Hudson St (West Village)

Must-try: Stella Artois on draft, and don’t forget to exchange a $5 bill for coins!

The neon glow of the Budweiser sign at Barrow Pub shines like a beacon on Hudson Street. You might think you know what happiness is, but if you’ve never dropped a handful of cash on endless Stella (cash only!), or signed your name on the bar’s whiteboard to join in a raucous game of pool while cheering for the Yankees or Knicks, then it’s time to rethink your definition of joy.

This is the place where I've laughed and cried, made friends, and spent more time with pool players than my own family. One evening, after dinner, grabbing a beer and then being jolted awake by the flashing lights at 4 AM was quite the experience. However, I feel like no words can truly capture the magic of Barrow’s.

Sunny’s Red Hook

Address: 253 Conover St (Red Hook)

Must-try: A cold Pacifico, especially when the backyard opens up in the warmer months, or a Dark & Stormy.

Sunny’s Red Hook has been a landmark in the area since 1890. It’s not just a bar; it’s a social hub where the dark wood decor and live music create a cozy atmosphere. I’ve taken the ferry from various places to get here — the vibe at Sunny’s is truly special and one-of-a-kind.

In the summer, sunlight spills onto the tables on the front and back patios, while on chilly nights, the warm interior and live music (local bands often play bluegrass and jazz) create a comforting ambiance. Remember to bring cash or hit the ATM out back!

Jimmy's Corner

Address: 140 W 44th St (Midtown)

Must-try: Campari and soda (cheap but small), or any draft beer.

Jimmy's Corner is where New Yorkers escape the hustle and bustle of Times Square. Located nearby, when you’re lost in the neon-lit crowd, you can say, "I know a place close by." Jimmy's has been a staple since 1971, with walls adorned with boxing memorabilia, as the owner, Jimmy Glenn, was once a fighter himself.

The beers here are incredibly affordable, and you’ll find both tourists and artists working in Times Square mingling together. Currently, the owner is trying to close the bar, but thankfully, Jimmy's son is working hard to keep it alive, and I hope he wins this battle.

Gowanus Yacht Club

Address: 323 Smith St (Carroll Gardens)

Must-try: A hot dog and a cold Pacifico.

If you’ve heard the phrase “find your beach,” then Gowanus Yacht Club is my beach here in Brooklyn. Don’t let the name fool you; this is a true dive bar: cash only, questionable restrooms, cheap beer, and picnic tables that creak.

This outdoor bar operates from mid-spring to early fall, where you’ll see locals flocking in on hot summer days. Just order a Pacifico and a hot dog, and your afternoon is set. In December, it transforms into a Christmas tree lot, which is a fun twist!

Kettle of Fish

Address: 59 Christopher St (West Village)

Must-try: Guinness in winter, Blue Moon in summer, or the Negroni, which I rate as better than many restaurants in the West Village.

Head down the stairs, and you’ll have a cold beer in your hand almost instantly. Don’t forget to play a free game of pinball; if it needs resetting, just wait a minute and it’ll sort itself out. If you win, you can fist bump with the folks lounging behind you.

Look for a large table that seats four or more, and then claim your spot for the night because once you’re in Kettle of Fish, it’s hard to leave. Be sure to make friends with the bartenders; they’re always cheerful and ready to share a drink with you!

Rocka Rolla

Address: 486 Metropolitan Ave, Williamsburg

Must-try: The coffee thing (coffee liqueur, brandy, whiskey, coffee, sugar, milk).

The last time I visited, my friends and I played cards with strangers for hours, one of whom unexpectedly flashed us and then left with our winnings. It was worth all the laughs we had retelling the story.

I usually only go to dive bars on gloomy days or late nights, but Rocka Rolla stands out with its sunny backyard. If you’re tired of beer, they serve many affordable cocktails in giant glasses. My favorite drink here is the “coffee thing” served in those iconic NYC green and white cups. I always walk in after a long day and ask for “one more,” but this drink keeps me so alert that I hardly need it!

Stonewall Inn

Address: 53 Christopher St (West Village)

Must-try: 2 bottles of Corona and a lime, so you don’t have to make multiple trips while playing pool.

Stonewall Inn is an LGBTQ+ bar and a National Historic Landmark, famous for the riots in 1969 that sparked the LGBTQ+ rights movement. It’s not just a place to grab a drink; Stonewall embodies a significant history and is an essential part of New York's culture.
