Congee – a simple dish that has an extraordinary appeal whenever I crave a light breakfast. At Hong Ji (Zhou Pin) 洪記 (粥品) in Jurong West, you can enjoy delicious bowls of congee starting at just 3.50 SGD. This place is located in the Jurong West 505 Market and Food Centre, which hosts three different congee stalls, but Hong Ji stands out for its reasonable prices and great quality.

What Are You Waiting For?

The restaurant is always bustling with customers, but the line moves quickly. On my first visit, I opted for the century egg and pork congee (3.50 SGD). To make my meal even more complete, I decided to add an egg for just 0.50 SGD.

Wonderful Experiences from Congee

The bowl of congee was generously topped with youtiao (Chinese crullers) and crispy shallots, which pleasantly surprised me with the restaurant's generosity. Many other places tend to skimp on toppings, but here, they really don’t hold back. There are also other options like the pork belly congee, which is slightly more expensive at 4 SGD, with the most complex dish, the Ting Zai congee, priced at 5 SGD.

Flavor in Every Spoonful

The congee here has a smooth texture—not too thick and not too watery—making it very easy to eat. With a drizzle of shallot oil, sesame oil, white pepper, and chopped scallions, this dish packs a rich flavor, even when enjoyed on its own. It truly warms the heart of anyone who indulges in it.

Don't Miss the Youtiao

The youtiao placed on top of the congee is both crispy and fragrant, creating a delightful contrast with the smoothness of the congee. However, I noticed that the youtiao had a slightly off smell, possibly due to old frying oil. While the texture is fantastic, the flavor of the youtiao could use some improvement.

Add an Egg for Extra Flavor

When I added the egg to my congee, I found that it made the congee quite a bit thinner. If you prefer your congee thicker, you might want to let the egg cook a bit longer with the residual heat, or simply skip it altogether.

Fresh and Tasty Pork

Each spoonful of congee came with tender pieces of fresh pork, lightly seasoned. The meat was soft and had no unpleasant odor, making it a perfect pairing with the congee and crispy shallots. I wished for a bit of ginger to add some zest to the dish, but if you enjoy congee without much seasoning, this is definitely an ideal choice.

Final Thoughts

Nowadays, finding a complete meal for just 3.50 SGD is quite rare. With the generous portions of congee from Hong Ji (Zhou Pin), it’s truly a steal. Every morning, the place is packed and attracts a lot of diners. Especially on Saturdays, the owner often closes earlier to avoid selling out before 6-8 PM like usual.

A Must-Try

Of course, I wouldn’t travel far just for a bowl of congee, but at this price, it’s genuinely worth it. If you’re in the area and craving something warm, Hong Ji (Zhou Pin) is definitely worth a visit.
