Preparing for Your Nova Scotia Adventure

If you're planning to explore Nova Scotia by car but aren't sure where to start, I have a fantastic one-week itinerary to share with you. This is based on the experiences I had during my recent fall trip with my friend, Lindsay.

Nova Scotia is truly stunning, featuring pristine coastlines, charming fishing villages, and a rich history that includes the Mi’kmaq, Black Loyalist, and Acadian cultures. And of course, the seafood here is absolutely irresistible!

A One-Week Itinerary for Discovering Nova Scotia

This itinerary kicks off in Halifax, taking you through the Bay of Fundy, the Annapolis Valley, Yarmouth, and the Acadian shores before circling back to Halifax. I've handpicked historical stops, lighthouses, beautiful beaches, and delicious dining spots along the way.

Your journey will also include must-visit locations like the UNESCO World Heritage site of Grand Pre, Peggy's Cove, and Lunenburg before returning to Halifax.

Arriving in Halifax

Your flight to Halifax will land at Stanfield International Airport, about a 45-minute drive from downtown Halifax. Even if you arrive later in the day, be sure to rent a car and kick off your adventure since we’ll be back in Halifax at the end of the trip.

Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s smaller provinces, so driving times each day usually range from 1 to 2 hours on well-paved highways. While there are main roads to get you quickly from point A to point B, taking the scenic backroads can lead to some breathtaking views.

Day One: Journey to the Annapolis Valley

To start your trip, head directly to the Annapolis Valley, visiting the communities of Grand Pre and Wolfville, which are less than 100 kilometers apart. If you arrive late like I did, use the key code to check in at Evangeline Inn & Motel, a modern and thoughtfully designed place featuring an indoor pool and an outdoor hot tub.

Dining in the Annapolis Valley

Be sure to rise early as there’s so much to explore! Coffee lovers will want to kick off their day at Just Us! Coffee & Tea House, home to Canada’s first organic and fair trade coffee. If you’re a wine enthusiast, take some time to explore the local vineyards. Domaine de Grand Pre Winery is one of the oldest in the region.

If wine isn’t your thing, swing by Annapolis Cider Company, where they grow, press, and bottle apples right in Wolfville. When lunchtime rolls around, I recommend stopping at Church Brewing Company, a restaurant set in a charming old church over 100 years old in Wolfville. Don’t forget to try their craft beers and dishes like fish tacos or chowder!

Historical Sites in the Annapolis Valley

For history buffs and nature lovers alike, Grand Pre—UNESCO World Heritage site—is a must-visit. The marshland here played a vital role in the establishment of Acadian settlements in the late 17th century. Stop by the visitor center to learn more about the area’s rich history.

Where to Stay in Digby

Your first day on the road will leave you feeling a bit tired. Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa is the perfect spot to unwind. With a warm outdoor pool and other relaxing amenities, it feels like you’re staying in a castle.

Day Two: Along the Bay of Fundy Coast

The second day will take you along the Bay of Fundy coastline from Digby to Yarmouth and the Acadian shores, finishing up in Shelburne. If you have a hearty appetite, enjoy the buffet at Digby Pines in the morning.

Alternatively, you can stop by Sea Biscuit Cafe & Eatery in Digby, known for its homemade dishes and a local art gallery upstairs. In Saulnierville, don’t miss Le Cuisine Robicheau, famous for its delectable seafood dishes like lobster lasagna and scallops.

Take some time to relax at Sip Cafe in Yarmouth, where you can enjoy coffee, tea, and freshly baked goods. And be sure to visit Captain Kat’s in Barrington, which serves some of the best seafood around and is renowned for its lobster dishes.

Attractions in Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores

Today, you’ll discover a variety of exciting spots. If you’re someone who loves new experiences, Yarmouth and the Acadian shores won’t disappoint!
